How Video Visitation Works at Brevard County Jail Complex
Brevard County Jail Complex uses Smart Communications for all visitor sessions. There are two modes available:
Remote Video Visitation: You schedule a session in advance and sit in front of your own computer, tablet, or webcam-enabled device at the scheduled time. This is the option most families use because it doesn’t require a trip to the jail at all.
Video on Demand: The inmate initiates the call from a kiosk inside the facility. When this happens, you’ll get a notification and have a 3-minute window to answer before the session is lost.
No in-person, face-to-face visiting room exists for general visitors at this jail. Everything routes through the Smart Communications video platform.
Step 1: Create a Smart Communications Account
Before you can schedule or receive a video visit, set up an account at smartinmate.com. You’ll need to add the inmate using their name and booking information. If you prefer to set up your account by phone, call Smart Communications at (727) 349-1561.
Step 2: Schedule Your Session
Once your account is active, log in and look for the scheduling calendar tied to the inmate’s profile. Video visitation must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, and you can book up to 7 days out. Pick a day and a time slot that works with your schedule, since missing a scheduled session usually means losing that slot without a refund.
Visiting Hours and Session Windows
| Time Block | Hours (EST) |
|---|
| Morning | 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM |
| Afternoon | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM |
| Evening | 8:00 PM – 10:30 PM |
These windows repeat 7 days a week, including weekends and most holidays. Confirm holiday scheduling changes by calling 321-690-1500 before you plan around a specific date.
What a Video Visit Costs
Smart Communications charges $0.25 per minute for scheduled video visits:
| Session Length | Cost |
|---|
| 15 minutes | $3.75 |
| 30 minutes | $7.50 |
Funds for video visits come out of your SmartInmate account balance, the same account you use for phone calls and messaging. Add funds before your scheduled session so the visit isn’t interrupted.
Setting Up Your Device
Before your first scheduled visit, test your webcam, microphone, and internet connection. A stable connection matters more than a fast one, since a dropped video call during a paid session generally cannot be refunded or extended. Use a quiet, private space so you and the inmate can speak freely within your visiting window.
Dress Code and Conduct for Video Visits
Even though video visits happen remotely, Brevard County Jail Complex still enforces basic conduct rules:
- Wear appropriate clothing. Being visible on camera in revealing or inappropriate attire can end the session early.
- No profanity, threatening language, or lewd behavior during the call.
- Visitors under a no-contact order, injunction, or otherwise flagged by security screening may be blocked automatically from scheduling.
- If you’re visiting on-site (for a professional or specially approved visit), secure personal property, including your cell phone, in your vehicle before entering.
Special and Professional Visits
Attorneys, clergy, and certain professional visitors may be able to arrange in-person, face-to-face visits. These are handled outside the standard SmartInmate video scheduling system. Contact Jail Command directly at 321-690-1500 to request a professional visit and confirm what documentation you’ll need to bring, such as a bar card or letter of representation.
Minors and Video Visits
Children can generally participate in video visits alongside a parent or guardian’s account, since the visit happens from home instead of inside a secure facility. Brevard County Jail Complex’s specific rules on unaccompanied minors using SmartInmate were not confirmed. If a minor is the primary visitor, have a responsible adult present and confirm any age-related account restrictions by calling 321-690-1500.
What Happens If You Miss Your Scheduled Time
If you scheduled a Remote Video Visitation session and don’t log in during your window, the session is generally forfeited, and the SmartInmate charge may still apply depending on the platform’s cancellation policy. If you know in advance you can’t make it, check smartinmate.com or call (727) 349-1561 to ask about canceling or rescheduling before the session starts.
For Video on Demand calls that the inmate initiates, missing the 3-minute answer window means the inmate has to start a new session from their end. There’s no way for you to redial into a missed on-demand call.
What’s Not Allowed
- No in-person, walk-up visits for general visitors; the jail does not maintain a traditional visiting room for family and friends
- No recording, screenshotting, or distributing video visit content outside the platform
- No visible weapons, drug paraphernalia, gang signs, or inappropriate gestures on camera
- No sharing your login credentials with anyone else to conduct a visit on your behalf
- Repeated dress code or conduct violations can lead to a suspension of your visiting privileges
Security and Recording
All video visitation sessions can be monitored, recorded, or reviewed by facility staff at any time. Treat these calls the way you would an in-person visit: avoid discussing the inmate’s pending legal case, court strategy, or details that could be used against them later.
Why Face-to-Face Visits Aren’t Offered
Many county jails, including this one, have moved to video-only visitation for general visitors as a security and staffing decision. Face-to-face contact is reserved for attorneys, clergy, and other professional visitors who need direct access for legal or religious reasons. If you have a specific situation you believe warrants an in-person exception, contact Jail Command directly at 321-690-1500 to ask.
