How to Visit FCI Oakdale I

Weekend and holiday visits only. Last entry at 2:00 PM sharp. You must be on the approved list — plan ahead.

Overview

FCI Oakdale I allows visits on weekends and federal holidays. Before you make the drive to Oakdale, two things must be in place: your name has to be on the inmate’s approved visitor list, and you need to understand the 6-point monthly system that limits how often each inmate can receive visitors. Get both sorted before planning a trip.

The 6-Point Monthly Visiting System

FCI Oakdale I uses a visiting point system. Each inmate receives 6 points per month. Every day you visit uses 1 point, regardless of how many approved visitors come that day. Federal holidays don’t count against the monthly total.

This means an inmate can receive visits on up to 6 different days per month — or fewer visits if family members are sharing those days. Coordinate with others on the approved list so the inmate doesn’t run out of points before the end of the month.

How to Get on the Approved Visitor List

Getting approved is an inmate-initiated process:

  1. Within their first week at FCI Oakdale I, the inmate submits names of people they want approved to their Unit Counselor.
  2. The Unit Counselor mails each prospective visitor a Visitor Information Form (BP-629).
  3. You complete the form and return it.
  4. BOP runs an NCIC criminal background check on every prospective visitor.
  5. The inmate is notified whether each person was approved or denied.

The list is ordinarily limited to 10 friends and associates (immediate family is listed separately and generally isn’t subject to the same cap). If you’re denied, the inmate can request a review through their counselor.
