Overview

Maine State Prison, like every MDOC facility, uses the Department’s own Money Deposit Service instead of a private vendor like JPay or TouchPay. The system lets you deposit into a resident’s general (trust) account and their separate phone account, with a $100 daily cap and $200 weekly cap per account, using a Visa or Mastercard. You’ll need the resident’s MDOC number and date of birth. Funds are non-refundable and post about 3 business days after your transaction. Cash can never be mailed to a resident.

Quick Facts

  • Money service: MDOC's own online Money Deposit Service, run in partnership with InforME, not a third-party vendor.
  • Deposit limit: $100 per day and $200 per week to the general (trust) account, and separately $100 per day and $200 per week to the phone account.
  • If you're funding both the trust account and phone account the same day, both deposits must be made in a single transaction.
  • Accepted payment: a valid Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card.
  • You need the resident's MDOC number and date of birth to complete a deposit.
  • Funds are available to the resident about 3 business days after your transaction.
  • All deposits made through this service are non-refundable.
  • A single email address cannot be used to deposit more than $100 to the trust account and $100 to the phone account in one day, an anti-misuse rule MDOC added on top of the standard caps.
  • Cash cannot be sent to any resident, by mail or otherwise.

How Maine’s System Is Different

Many states route family deposits through a private financial company like JPay, TouchPay, or Access Corrections. Maine does not. MDOC operates its own Money Deposit Service directly, in partnership with InforME (the state’s official information services provider), and it’s the same system used for every MDOC adult facility, not something specific to Maine State Prison. That means the deposit process is identical whether the resident is at MSP, Maine Correctional Center, Mountain View, or elsewhere in the MDOC system.

What You Need Before You Start

To make a deposit, you’ll need:

  • The resident’s MDOC number
  • Their date of birth
  • A valid credit or debit card carrying a Visa or Mastercard logo

You do not create a traditional account the way you might with a private vendor’s app. Each deposit is a direct transaction tied to the resident’s MDOC number and birth date.

Two Separate Accounts: Trust and Phone

The Money Deposit Service lets you fund two different accounts:

  1. The general (trust) account, which the resident uses for commissary and other approved purchases.
  2. The phone account, which funds the resident’s own outgoing calls (see the phone calls guide for how this compares to setting up a family-side AdvancePay account instead).

Each account has its own daily and weekly cap. If you want to fund both the trust account and the phone account on the same day, MDOC requires that both deposits happen within a single transaction instead of two separate ones.

Deposit Limits

AccountDaily LimitWeekly Limit
General (Trust) Account$100$200
Phone Account$100$200

MDOC has also added a rule specifically to prevent misuse: a single email address cannot be used to make more than a $100 trust deposit and a $100 phone deposit in one day, even across different cards or sessions.

When the Money Becomes Available

Deposited funds are typically available to the resident about 3 business days after your transaction goes through. There is no same-day or next-day option through this service. Plan ahead if the resident needs funds by a specific date, such as before a scheduled purchase or a phone account running low.

Deposits Are Non-Refundable

Once you submit a deposit through the Money Deposit Service, it cannot be refunded. Double-check the resident’s MDOC number and date of birth before completing the transaction, since an error could send funds to the wrong account.

What We Couldn’t Confirm

MDOC’s official pages describe the online Money Deposit Service in detail, and are explicit that cash cannot be mailed to a resident. What isn’t spelled out on the official pages we reviewed is whether Maine State Prison specifically accepts money orders or cashier’s checks by mail as an alternative to the online system, the way some other facilities do. Rather than guess, call the facility at (207) 273-5300 and ask directly whether a mailed money order is accepted, and if so, how it should be made out and addressed.

Q

How do I send money to someone at Maine State Prison?

Use MDOC's Money Deposit Service online. You'll need the resident's MDOC number, their date of birth, and a Visa or Mastercard card.

Send Money
Q

Does Maine State Prison use JPay, TouchPay, or a similar vendor?

No. MDOC runs its own Money Deposit Service in partnership with InforME, instead of contracting with a private trust-deposit company.

Send Money
Q

How much can I deposit at once?

$100 in a day and $200 in a week per balance. The trust and phone accounts carry that limit independently, so reaching the cap on one leaves the other still open.

Send Money
Q

What if I want to fund both the trust account and the phone account the same day?

MDOC requires both deposits to happen in a single transaction if you're funding both accounts on the same day.

Send Money
Q

How long until the money is available?

About 3 business days after your transaction.

Send Money
Q

Can I get a refund if I make a mistake?

No. All deposits made through the Money Deposit Service are non-refundable, so confirm the resident's MDOC number and date of birth before submitting.

Send Money
Q

Can I mail cash to a resident?

No. MDOC's policy states cash shall not be sent to any resident, under any circumstance.

Send Money
Q

Can I mail a money order or check instead of using the online system?

We could not confirm whether Maine State Prison accepts mailed money orders as an alternative to the online deposit system. Call (207) 273-5300 to ask directly before mailing one.

Send Money
Q

What's the difference between the trust account and the phone account?

The trust account covers commissary and other approved purchases. The phone account funds the resident's own outgoing calls, which is different from setting up a family-owned AdvancePay account to receive their calls.

Send Money
Q

Is there a limit on how much one email address can deposit per day?

Yes. MDOC added a rule capping a single email address at $100 to the trust account and $100 to the phone account per day, to prevent misuse of the system.

Send Money
Q

What information do I need before I start a deposit?

The resident's MDOC number, their date of birth, and a valid Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card.

Send Money
Q

Who do I contact if I have a problem with a deposit?

For questions about the deposit service itself, email MDOC's Corrections Webdesk at [email protected]. For technical issues, call InforME at (207) 621-2600 or email [email protected].
