Visiting Days and Hours

Piscataquis County Jail holds visits four days a week:

If the person you’re visiting was booked directly by Piscataquis County on a local charge, plan around the Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday sessions. If they’re being boarded there from another county jail or under a federal contract with the U.S. Marshals Service, Sunday is set aside specifically for that group.

How to Schedule: A Discrepancy Worth Knowing About

This is a case where being upfront matters more than pretending there’s one clean answer. The Sheriff’s Office publishes two different sets of scheduling instructions on its own website, and we could not confirm which one is current as of this guide’s last verification:

• The main County Jail page says to call (207) 564-9083 and request a scheduled visit, with requests taken on Tuesday or Wednesday between 9 and 11 a.m.
• The separate Rules for Visiting an Inmate page, last revised in 2005, says to call (207) 564-3304, option 2, with requests taken on Monday or Tuesday between 8 and 11 a.m.

Instead of guessing which one is right, call either number ahead of your planned visiting day and ask directly which process the jail currently uses. Both numbers reach the Sheriff’s Office, so you won’t be calling the wrong department either way.

Visitor Limits and Session Length

Each inmate can have up to 2 visitors at a time. Sessions run a minimum of 60 minutes, though a visit can be shortened if an inmate or visitor behaves in a way that disrupts others. Children under 18 count toward the 2-visitor limit and are expected to behave appropriately during the visit.

Checking In

• Register with the on-duty corrections officer in the jail lobby and show identification when asked.
• Place your personal belongings, including pocketbooks, in a keyed locker in the lobby before your visit.
• Expect the possibility of a pat search. Jail personnel may search visitors as part of standard security screening.
• Once your session starts, you can’t leave and re-enter. If an inmate leaves the contact visiting room before the visit ends, they are not allowed back in and the visit ends immediately.
• Exit through the jail lobby door when your visit is over.

Conduct Rules

Inmates must sit facing their visitors with their feet on the floor. Visitors and inmates may hold hands, but the jail’s rules specifically prohibit prolonged kissing or hugging, and prohibit foul language. Staff will end a visit and return the inmate to their housing area if either party doesn’t behave appropriately.

What’s Not Allowed

• No contraband. Any visitor who brings or attempts to bring contraband into the jail will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
• No visitors who are intoxicated, or who jail staff reasonably believe pose a safety threat. They’ll be asked to leave the premises.
• No hand-delivered items of any kind, including letters and photos. Everything has to go through the mail instead. See the mail and photos guide for the address.

Special and Professional Visits

Special visits may be approved by the Jail Administrator or the on-duty Shift Supervisor. Professional visitors, including attorneys and clergy, may visit at any reasonable time with the Shift Supervisor’s approval, outside the standard visiting schedule.

Handbook and Visitor Application Form. What We Found

We checked specifically for two things, as we do for every facility: a downloadable inmate or family handbook PDF, and a specific visitor application or registration form. We did not find a standalone handbook PDF published on the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office website. We also did not find a separate visitor application form. Unlike many other facilities, Piscataquis County Jail’s approval process is a phone call rather than a mailed-in document, though as noted above, the website gives two different phone numbers and call windows for making that call.

A Note on the Jail’s Operating Status

In July 2025, a state inspection found Piscataquis County Jail out of compliance with several health and safety standards, and the Maine Department of Corrections temporarily ordered a halt to new intakes. The county submitted a corrective action plan that state officials approved, and the jail resumed accepting new inmates in August 2025. We found no reports of a further intake halt since then, but we recommend calling (207) 564-3304 to confirm the jail is operating normally, especially if you’re trying to schedule a visit around a recent transfer or booking.
