That page confirms the jail’s main phone line, (207) 255-3434, along with the names of the Sheriff (Barry Curtis), Chief Deputy (Michael Crabtree), and Jail Administrator (Capt. Rich Rolfe). It does not include a dedicated page for jail visiting hours, rules, or a visitor approval process. This is different from many other Maine county jails we’ve researched, which typically publish this information directly.

What We Could Not Confirm

We looked specifically for the details every family needs before a visit and could not confirm any of the following from the Sheriff’s Office’s own materials:

• Current visiting days and hours
• Whether visits are in person, video, or both
• A dress code
• A list of prohibited items
• Visitor limits per session
• Whether a visitor application or background check is required, and if so, how to submit one
• Rules for bringing children

Several third-party inmate-lookup websites report that Washington County Jail uses video visitation, allows 2 visits per week with up to 2 guests at a time for about 25 minutes, and requires scheduling at least 24 hours in advance along with a visitation form for approval. We’re including this because it’s the most specific information available, but none of it appears on the Sheriff’s Office’s own site, so treat it as a starting point instead of something you can rely on without confirming.

What to Ask When You Call

1. What are the current visiting days and hours?
2. Are visits in person, by video, or both?
3. Do I need to fill out a visitor application in advance, and if so, how do I get it?
4. Is there a dress code or list of prohibited items I should know about?
5. How many visitors can come at once, and how long is each visit?
6. Can children visit, and are there any age restrictions or requirements for who can bring them?
7. Is there anything specific I need to bring, like photo ID?

Writing down the answers, along with the date you called and who you spoke with, is a good habit for any facility that doesn’t publish its rules online, since policies can change and phone-answered information may vary by shift.

ID Requirements

The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t publish specific ID requirements for Washington County Jail visitors. As a general rule at Maine county jails, visitors are commonly asked for a valid, government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID card, passport, or military ID. Confirm this directly when you call, since Washington County Jail’s specific policy isn’t published.

If You’re Traveling From Out of the Area

Washington County is Maine’s easternmost county, often called Down East Maine, and it’s a large, mostly rural area. Machias is roughly 90 minutes from Bangor and considerably farther from southern Maine or out of state. If you’re planning a trip specifically to visit, call ahead first: without published hours, showing up without confirming risks a wasted trip, especially given the distance many families travel to reach this part of the state.

We checked specifically for two things, as we do for every facility. We could not find a downloadable inmate or family handbook PDF anywhere on the Washington County Sheriff’s Office website. We also could not find a downloadable visitor application form on the official site. Some third-party sites mention a visitation form requirement, but since we couldn’t locate or confirm it through an official source, ask directly when you call whether a form exists and how to get one.
