Your Three Options for Sending Money
Option 1: Online Through JailATM
JailATM at deposits.jailatm.com is the fastest way to put money on an account. You can deposit from any device without visiting the facility.
Step 1. Go to deposits.jailatm.com.
Create a free account or log in if you already have one.
Step 2. Search for Ashe County Detention Center.
Find the facility in the JailATM system. It may be listed under the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office.
Step 3. Enter the inmate’s name and booking number.
You need the person’s full legal name and their booking number. Do not have the booking number yet? See the inmate search guide for how to get it by calling (336) 846-5633.
Step 4. Choose your deposit amount.
Enter the amount you want to send. JailATM will show you the service fee before you confirm. Fees vary by amount and payment method.
Step 5. Pay with a debit or credit card.
Complete the payment. Deposits typically post within a few hours. JailATM sends a confirmation by email.
Option 2: In-Person Lobby Kiosk
If you are already at the facility or live nearby, the lobby kiosk at 140 Government Circle, Jefferson, NC 28640 lets you deposit in cash or by card on the spot. You need the inmate’s name and booking number. Kiosk transactions typically post quickly. The kiosk is available during facility lobby hours. Call (336) 846-5633 to confirm current hours before you make the trip.
Option 3: USPS Money Order by Mail
Mail a USPS money order to:
[Inmate Full Name]
Ashe County Detention Center
140 Government Circle
Jefferson, NC 28640
Make the money order payable to the inmate’s name, not to the facility. Write the inmate’s booking number in the memo line. Do not send cash, personal checks, or cashier’s checks. Only USPS money orders are confirmed for mail deposits. Allow several business days for processing.
Ordering Commissary Directly for Families
If you want to send specific items rather than just funds, Oasis / JailCanteen at jailcanteen.com is the approved commissary vendor for families. JailCanteen lets you browse an approved product list and order food, hygiene items, and other goods to be delivered directly to the inmate’s account or as a package, depending on facility rules.
InmateCanteen at team3.inmatecanteen.com may also be accepted, but this has not been confirmed from a primary source. Call (336) 846-5611 to ask which vendors are currently approved before placing an order through a second platform.
What the Money Is Used For
Funds deposited to an inmate account at Ashe County Detention Center go toward:
- Commissary purchases: Food, beverages, hygiene products, paper, stamps, and other approved items available through the commissary.
- Phone time: Paytel phone calls and video visits are charged against the inmate’s account or a separate Paytel account you fund. See the phone calls guide for how Paytel billing works.
- Other authorized purchases: Depending on facility rules, funds may cover e-messaging, printing, or other services offered through the inmate’s account system.
Account Limits and Holds
County jails may place limits on how much money an account can hold at one time. The limit for Ashe County Detention Center has not been published, so call (336) 846-5611 if you are unsure whether a large deposit will go through in full.
Courts sometimes place holds on inmate funds for restitution, fines, or court costs. If a deposit goes through but the person reports they cannot access it, ask them to speak to a facility officer or call (336) 846-5611 to ask about any holds on the account.
What Happens to Funds If the Person Transfers
If someone is transferred from Ashe County Detention Center to a state prison or another facility, the funds in their account may not follow automatically. The process for transferring remaining funds depends on the systems involved. Call (336) 846-5611 as soon as you learn of a transfer to ask about what happens to the balance and how to retrieve it or have it forwarded.
Troubleshooting a Failed Deposit
If a JailATM deposit does not post within 24 hours:
- Check your JailATM account for any error messages or declined payment notices.
- Confirm the booking number was entered correctly. A wrong number is the most common reason a deposit fails to post.
- Contact JailATM support through deposits.jailatm.com.
- Call (336) 846-5633 or (336) 846-5611 to ask whether the deposit appeared on their end.
