Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution sits on a 100-acre tract on the county line between Avery and Mitchell counties in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, just outside Spruce Pine. The facility is designed around reentry: it partners with Mayland Community College to offer a full two-year associate degree in business management, along with GED prep, adult basic education, computer applications, commercial cleaning, and horticulture courses. Residents can also participate in inter-facility job assignments that provide real work experience in the community before release. The facility holds up to 816 men and is accredited by the American Correctional Association. Warden Bret Bullis oversees operations. For families, the reentry focus means programs are designed to help people leave with usable credentials and community connections, which is worth knowing as you plan for what comes after.
