Columbus Correctional Institution’s original dormitory was built in the late 1930s and is still in use today. In the 1970s, incarcerated people helped build the recreation building and a 28-cell segregation unit under correction engineers. By 1990, the General Assembly had added 312-bed dormitories, followed by an additional 208-bed dormitory in April 1994. The facility holds ACA (American Correctional Association) accreditation. On site, Correction Enterprises operates the Whiteville Sewing Plant, giving incarcerated workers job training in sewing and tailoring. Southeastern Community College also runs programs including commercial cleaning, computer applications, masonry, Adult Basic Education, GED preparation, and substance abuse courses.
