What Is the NC OPI Search?

The NC Department of Adult Correction Offender Public Information (OPI) search is the state’s official database for everyone in NC state prison custody. Eastern Correctional Institution is a state facility, so anyone held here appears in this system. The OPI is run by NC DAC and costs nothing to use.

How to Search

Go to webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view. You can search by:

• First name and last name
• OPUS Number (if you already have it)

Enter the information and submit the search. Results will list people matching that name across all NC state facilities. Look for the entry that shows Eastern Correctional Institution as the current location.

Eastern CI and Greene CI Share a Campus

Eastern CI and Greene Correctional Institution sit on the same campus in Maury, NC. They are separate facilities with different populations and contact numbers. When you get a search result, confirm it says Eastern Correctional Institution, not Greene CI. If someone was moved between the two facilities, the OPI record should reflect the correct current location within a day or two.

What the Search Shows

A successful search result includes:

• Full legal name
• OPUS Number (the unique ID assigned by NC DAC)
• Current facility (should show Eastern CI if that is where they are)
• Custody level (close at Eastern CI)
• Projected release date (may be listed depending on the record)

Write down the OPUS Number right away. It is required for every transaction: ConnectNetwork money deposits, TextBehind mail, and the visitor application all ask for it.

What Is an OPUS Number?

OPUS stands for Offender Population Unified System. It is the number NC DAC assigns to each person when they enter state custody. The OPUS Number stays the same even if the person transfers to a different facility. Think of it as the permanent ID that follows them throughout their time in NC state custody.

Understanding Eastern CI’s Housing Units

Eastern CI holds approximately 450 close-custody men across five housing units of 96 single cells each, plus a 48-cell restricted housing unit. All inmates are close custody, which means a higher level of supervision and stricter movement rules than medium or minimum facilities.

The OPI search shows custody level but does not specify which unit within the facility someone is in. Knowing the unit matters for visitation: inmates in the restricted housing unit may have non-contact visits only. If you need to confirm which unit the person is in, call (252) 653-5774.

If You Cannot Find the Person

A few things can explain a missing search result:

• Recently transferred: Eastern CI accepts transfers from other facilities. If someone was just moved here, the OPI record may not have updated yet. Wait a day and search again.
• Name spelling: Try alternate spellings of the first or last name. Some records use a middle name or a shortened version.
• Not yet processed: If someone was recently sentenced or moved into state custody, it can take a few days for the OPI record to appear.
• Released or transferred out: If they were released or sent to another facility, their Eastern CI record will no longer show as active.
• Greene CI mix-up: Since both facilities share a campus, confirm which one the person was sent to. Try searching for both facilities if you are not sure.
