What Is the NC OPI Search?

The NC Department of Adult Correction Offender Public Information (OPI) search is the official state database for everyone in NC state prison custody. Greene Correctional Institution is a state facility, so anyone held here appears in this system. The OPI is run by NC DAC and costs nothing to use.

How to Search

Go to webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view. You can search by:

• First name and last name
• OPUS Number (if you already have it)

Enter the information and submit the search. The results list everyone matching that name across all NC state facilities. Look for the entry that shows Greene Correctional Institution as the current location.

Why You Must Confirm the Facility Name

Greene CI and Eastern Correctional Institution are adjacent facilities on the same stretch of NC Hwy. 903 in Maury. They are close enough that it is easy to confuse one for the other. But they are distinct facilities with different addresses, phone numbers, and staff.

If the OPI result shows Eastern Correctional Institution and not Greene CI, use the Eastern CI address and phone number, not the ones on this page. Sending mail to Greene’s TextBehind address when someone is at Eastern, or driving to the wrong entrance, wastes time and can delay communication. The OPI search takes 30 seconds and removes all doubt.

What the Search Shows

A successful search result includes:

• Full legal name
• OPUS Number (the unique ID assigned by NC DAC)
• Current facility (should show Greene Correctional Institution)
• Custody level (minimum at Greene CI)
• Projected release date (may be listed depending on the record)

What Is an OPUS Number?

OPUS stands for Offender Population Unified System. It is the number NC DAC assigns to each person when they enter state custody. The OPUS Number stays the same even if the person transfers to a different facility. It is the permanent ID that follows them throughout their time in NC state custody.

Greene CI’s Role as a Reentry Facility

Greene CI is a minimum custody, designated reentry facility. People at Greene CI are typically in the later stages of their sentence and preparing for release through programming like Work Release, Strive Transition, Home Leaves, and Community Volunteer Leaves. This means the population here can change more frequently than at a higher-custody prison. Transfers in and out happen as people progress through reentry programming or move to work release placements.

Run the OPI search before every visit to confirm the person is still at Greene CI. If they have moved to a work release program or transferred, the search result will show the new location.

If You Cannot Find the Person

A few things can explain a missing search result:

• Recently transferred: Greene CI accepts transfers and releases people on a regular basis. If someone was just moved here or to a work release placement, the OPI record may not have updated yet. Wait a day and search again.
• Name spelling: Try alternate spellings of the first or last name. Some records use a middle name or a shortened version.
• Not yet processed: If someone was recently sentenced or moved into state custody, it can take a few days for the OPI record to appear.
• Released or transferred out: If they were released or sent to another facility or work release, their Greene CI record will no longer show as active.
• At Eastern CI instead: Confirm you are searching for the right facility. Run the search and check whether the result shows Eastern Correctional Institution.
