Why You Cannot Call In
You cannot dial (910) 572-3784 and ask to speak with the person. Southern CI uses a controlled phone system where the person inside initiates all calls. When they have phone access during scheduled times, they dial your number from the facility phone. Your job is to make sure your number is set up and funded so the call goes through when they dial.
Close Custody and Phone Access
Southern CI holds men at the close custody level. Phone time is part of a structured daily schedule. Times are set by the facility and may vary by housing unit. The person inside can tell you when phone access is typically available in their unit. At close custody, call times may be more structured and shorter than at minimum or medium custody facilities.
All calls are monitored and recorded. This is standard practice at all NC state prisons and especially at close custody facilities. Do not say anything on a call you would not want captured. Calls to attorneys may be treated differently; contact the facility at (910) 572-3784 for questions about attorney-client call handling.
Step 1. Create an AdvancePay Account
Go to ConnectNetwork.com and create a free account. Use the phone number you want to receive calls on. You can also call 800-483-8314 to set up an account by phone.
AdvancePay is different from the trust account you fund for commissary. AdvancePay is a balance on your account. When the person calls your number, the cost comes from your AdvancePay balance. The person does not need to have money on their own trust account for the call to go through if you have AdvancePay funded.
Step 2. Add Your Phone Number
Once your account is created, make sure the number you want to receive calls on is registered. If the number is not in the ConnectNetwork system, calls from Southern CI to that number will not connect.
If you have a new phone number, update it in your ConnectNetwork account before the person tries to call.
Step 3. Fund the Account
Add money to your AdvancePay balance through ConnectNetwork.com or the ConnectNetwork app. The balance covers incoming calls at $0.10 per minute. A 15-minute call costs $1.50.
The person can also pay for calls from their own trust account. See the send money guide to deposit funds into their trust account through ConnectNetwork.
If a Call Does Not Connect
If the person tries to call and the call does not connect:
Check that your number is registered in your ConnectNetwork account
Make sure your AdvancePay balance is funded
Check that your carrier does not block calls from correctional facilities (some carriers do this by default; contact your carrier to whitelist the number)
Call ConnectNetwork customer support through ConnectNetwork.com
Call (910) 572-3784 with questions about the call system at Southern CI
Video Visits
If phone calls are not possible or you want to see each other, video visits are available through the Getting Out Visits app, operated by ViaPath/GTL. You can access it at sso.gtlconnect.com or by downloading the Getting Out app on your phone or tablet.
Video visits require a funded account. Call (910) 572-3784 to confirm video visit availability and scheduling at Southern CI. Hours and procedures may differ from in-person visiting schedules.
Messaging Through ConnectNetwork
ConnectNetwork also supports electronic messaging at some NC facilities. Log in to your ConnectNetwork.com account to see if messaging is available for Southern CI. Messages are reviewed by staff before delivery.
What the Person Needs on Their End
The person inside dials your number using the facility phone system during their scheduled phone time. They do not need to set anything up on their end as long as your number is registered in the system and there is a balance (either in your AdvancePay or their trust account) to cover the call.
If a call keeps getting cut off or the person cannot reach you, have them ask their housing unit officer about the call system or report any technical issues to facility staff.
