Where Letters Go

Letters for ADTC are not mailed to Avenel. NJDOC routes general mail through Pigeonly Corrections:

1407 is ADTC’s facility code; people in the Special Treatment Unit use 1409 instead. Include your name and return address.

Scanned, Then Printed

Each letter is scanned in color, printed and sent on to the prison. NJDOC keeps the original 45 days and then destroys it, so do not mail anything you need back.

Sizes and Photos

• Envelopes no larger than 4 x 9½ inches, paper up to 8½ x 11.
• Greeting cards and postcards up to 5 x 7.
• 4 x 6 photos, 10 per envelope at most.

Not accepted: glitter, rhinestones, stickers or anything glued on; wax paper; photos cut into shapes; sticky notes; Express, Priority or bubble envelopes; newspaper clippings; bulk mail; money; Polaroids and photos printed by third-party photo vendors such as Shutterfly; official documents, and anything you do not want destroyed. If one item breaks the rules, the whole envelope is rejected.

Packages, Books and Legal Mail

These go to NJDOC’s Centralized Search and Sorting Center (CSSC) in Crosswicks, not to Avenel:

Legal mail is marked “Confidential” with the law office’s return address. Packages come from an approved source, publications directly from the publisher or vendor.

Saving the Mail Days for Code 1407

ADTC letters, and STU letters under 1409, all go to Las Vegas first, where a posted envelope spends 3 to 5 business days arriving before it’s scanned. Letters and photos sent through Pigeonly from your phone skip that leg, and the 10-photo, 4 x 6 limit still applies.
