Northern State Inmate Search

Search NJDOC

The NJDOC Offender Search lists people in New Jersey state custody. You accept a disclaimer, then search. Write down the person’s SBI number: letters need it on the first line.

What the Prison Holds

NJDOC says Northern State houses general population, special needs, a close custody unit and in-patient mental health units, plus a minimum unit. The 2025 PREA audit counted about 2,140 men, ages 18 to 80, from minimum to maximum custody.

Restorative Housing

Northern State’s close custody unit, which can hold up to 650 people, is the largest restorative housing unit in New Jersey’s prison system.

When Records Come Down

People drop off the search one year after their custodial term ends, except people on community or parole supervision for life. Data is refreshed every two weeks.

One Code for Every Unit

Northern State holds men from minimum to maximum custody, but mail for all of them uses their SBI number and code 1406. Pigeonly lets you write that letter or pick photos on your phone, then prints and mails it for you.
