Albion takes visits at weekends and on weekday holidays, 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with arrival closing at 2:00 PM and one visit per scheduled day. Before any of that matters, check the letter: each weekend, Saturday and Sunday go to different halves of the alphabet by the incarcerated person’s last name, A to K and L to Z, so only one of the two days is yours. Two things shape a trip here. Weekday holidays were added from September 7, 2026, and a free coach runs to Albion from downstate, which for a prison seven hours from the city decides whether visits happen at all.
Albion’s NYSDOCCS page lists weekends as its visiting days. NYSDOCCS’s visitation update effective September 7, 2026 adds Albion to the prisons that also visit on weekday holidays, so a holiday that lands midweek is a visiting day here too.
The dated 2026 schedule marks each holiday with an asterisk.
Hours are 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
The room stays open until 2:30 PM. The latest you can arrive is 2:00 PM.
That half hour is not a grace period. Arriving at 2:10 means the visit does not happen, whatever time you left home. Put the margin into the journey.
Check this before anything else, because it decides whether the trip is possible at all.
Albion splits its weekend visiting days by the first letter of the incarcerated person’s last name. The groups are A to K and L to Z. On the dated schedule, each weekend’s Saturday and Sunday go to different groups. If her last name begins with R, only the L to Z day is hers, however far you have come.
On an ordinary weekend, that means one visiting day for any one family.
NYSDOCCS publishes a dated visitation calendar for Albion on the facility’s own page, revised August 2026, and that document is the authority on which days belong to which group.
Albion allows one visit per scheduled visit day.
There is no leaving and coming back, so whatever time you have inside on your group’s day is the time you get.
Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five who does not count toward the three.
A child of five or older does count. A group of three adults and a four year old fits. The same group with a six year old does not, and that is the detail worth checking before four people get in a car.
Albion is one of 18 New York prisons reached by a free roundtrip visitor bus, run in partnership with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
It costs the family nothing. Albion sits in Orleans County in the far west of the state, about seven hours from New York City, so for a downstate household without a car the coach is not a convenience, it is the route.
Seats are booked ahead, which is a good reason to check the lookup before the date in case of a transfer.
The village is small and the prison is on State School Road.
| From | Approximate journey |
|---|---|
| Rochester | About forty minutes |
| Buffalo | About one hour |
| Syracuse | About two hours |
| Albany | About four and a half hours |
| New York City | About seven hours |
There is a second state prison in this village. Orleans Correctional Facility is on Gaines Basin Road, about two miles away, and it holds men. Set the satnav to 3595 State School Road and not to the village name.
Nothing needs booking for a regular visit. Under NYSDOCCS rules, you can visit during visiting hours with proper photo ID, as long as she agrees to the visit. The coach seat is booked separately. The visit is not.
What to do:
NYSDOCCS recommends contacting the prison before a first visit. Albion’s number is 585-589-5511.
Some visitors must get approval in writing first: people on probation or parole, NYSDOCCS staff, volunteers, contract workers and anyone with past or pending criminal cases. They write to the Superintendent ahead of the visit, and probation or parole also need written approval from their officer.
Extra visitors beyond the limit can be requested through the Superintendent’s Office, with several weeks’ to a month’s notice.
Children. Her own children can visit without written permission, with her name on the birth certificate. A child under 18 visiting without a parent or guardian needs the parent’s written permission, sent ahead or brought by the adult with them.
Photo identification for everyone over sixteen, and a visit does not go ahead without it.
Phones, bags and electronics stay in the car or on the coach.
If you are bringing money, the visitor lockbox takes up to $50 cash a day in total, so it goes in there, not into the visiting room.
Even with the free coach, most downstate families reach Orleans County a few times a year.
Calls from every New York state prison have been free since August 2025, and letters and photographs land on the weekends nobody is travelling. Pigeonly sends both from your phone, addressed to State School Road with the right ZIP+4, so the weeks in between still carry something.
