Wednesdays Belong to Everyone

Every Wednesday on the Eastern calendar is marked ALL. No DIN, no group, no letter. Eastern is one of a handful of New York prisons with a weekday that belongs to every family, under the NYSDOCCS visitation update that took effect on 7 September 2026.

For a family that can take a weekday, Wednesday is the simplest visit Eastern offers.

Weekends Go by the DIN

The schedule heading reads:

Weekend Visitation days list last digit(s) of DIN of incarcerated individual scheduled

Each Saturday and Sunday is labelled Odd or Even. A DIN ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 is Odd, and one ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 is Even. Zero counts as even. Saturday and Sunday usually go to different groups.

No Weekday Holidays Here

Most New York prisons now open on weekday holidays. Eastern does not: the 7 September update lists it among the prisons where weekday holiday visiting stays suspended.

A holiday that falls on a weekend keeps its Odd or Even label on the Eastern calendar, so it is not a catch-up day for everyone either. Check the date on the calendar before you travel.

Hours, and the 2:30 PM Line

Visits run 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The latest you can arrive is 2:30 PM, and Eastern allows one visit per day.

When the Room Is Full

If space runs short, NYSDOCCS ends visits in a published order:

1. Visitors who volunteer to leave.
2. Local visitors, from within 100 miles, after three hours.
3. Visitors from further away, after three hours.

Special Housing

Anyone in the Special Housing Unit at Eastern is allowed one non-legal visit within a seven-day period, on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

Three Visitors, and the Under Fives

Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five, who does not count toward the three.

A child of five or older does count, so three adults and a six year old is a group of four and will not fit.

How a Visit Is Arranged

Nothing needs booking for a regular visit. Under NYSDOCCS rules you can visit during visiting hours with proper photo identification, as long as the person inside agrees to the visit.

On a first visit, staff take your photograph for the visitor identification system and you sign a statement agreeing to the visiting rules. Leave time for it before the 2:30 PM cutoff.

Some visitors need advance written approval: people on probation or parole, NYSDOCCS staff, volunteers, contract workers, and anyone with past or pending criminal cases.

Children are straightforward. Their own children can visit without written permission where the parent’s name is on the birth certificate. A child under eighteen visiting without a parent or guardian needs the parent’s written permission.

Eastern is at 30 Institution Rd in the hamlet of Napanoch, Ulster County.

Ulster Correctional Facility, a medium security prison, is also in Napanoch at 750 Berme Road, with weekday holiday visiting and no Wednesdays. Check which prison you are visiting before you set off.

The free state visitor bus serves Eastern NY.

What to Bring

Photo identification for everyone over sixteen, and the visit does not proceed without it.

Phones, bags and electronics stay in the car.

If you are bringing money, the visitor lockbox takes $50 in cash a day in total, however many of you are visiting, and it takes money orders and checks as well.

On the Days That Are Not Yours

Half the weekend days belong to the other group, and weekday holidays are closed.

Calls from every New York state prison have been free since August 2025, and letters and photographs land on the days you cannot come. Pigeonly sends both from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 338 in Napanoch with the right ZIP, so the days in between are not silent ones.
