Two Sessions, Depending on the Unit
| General population and SHU | Residential Rehabilitation Unit |

| Hours | 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM | 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM |
| Latest arrival | 1:30 PM | 8:00 PM |

The Residential Rehabilitation Unit is the one group with evening visits. If the person you visit moves into or out of the RRU, the session that applies to them changes with it, so confirm their unit before you set off.
Weekends Are Split by Housing Unit
The Gouverneur schedule states that weekend visits are “divided into specific segments of the population by housing unit”.
The calendar that follows lists every weekend date, but it does not say which unit has which days. So this page will not guess. What is certain:
- The split is by housing unit, not by name or DIN.
- The person inside knows their unit, and the facility knows the rota.
- Ask them which weekends and days are theirs before a long journey.
A family that turns up on a day belonging to another unit has come a long way for nothing, so that one question on a call is worth asking early.
Holidays and Weekday Holidays
Holidays are marked on the Gouverneur calendar with an asterisk. For the rest of 2026 they are October 12, November 11, November 26 and December 25.
Under the NYSDOCCS visitation update that took effect on 7 September 2026, Gouverneur is one of the prisons that takes visits on weekday holidays, and the RRU evening session runs on holidays too.
The 1:30 PM Line
The daytime session runs 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM, and the latest you can arrive is 1:30 PM. For a family starting from the south of the state, that makes an early departure or an overnight stay the practical choice.
Special Housing
Anyone in the Special Housing Unit is allowed one non-legal visit within a seven-day period, during the daytime session. The schedule counts each week from Sunday to Saturday, so a Saturday visit and the next day’s Sunday fall in different weeks.
Three Visitors, and the Under Fives
Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five, who does not count toward the three.
A child of five or older does count, so three adults and a six year old is a group of four and will not fit.
How a Visit Is Arranged
Nothing needs booking for a regular visit. Under NYSDOCCS rules you can visit during visiting hours with proper photo identification, as long as the person inside agrees to the visit.
On a first visit, staff take your photograph for the visitor identification system and you sign a statement agreeing to the visiting rules. Leave time for it before the cutoff.
Some visitors need advance written approval: people on probation or parole, NYSDOCCS staff, volunteers, contract workers, and anyone with past or pending criminal cases.
Children are straightforward. Their own children can visit without written permission where the parent’s name is on the birth certificate. A child under eighteen visiting without a parent or guardian needs the parent’s written permission.
Getting to Gouverneur
Gouverneur is in St. Lawrence County, at 112 Scotch Settlement Road outside the village.
| From | Approximate journey |
|---|
| Watertown | About forty minutes |
| Ogdensburg | About forty minutes |
| Syracuse | About two hours |
| New York City | About six hours |
Riverview Correctional Facility in Ogdensburg is a separate state prison in the same county. It is not the place to go for a Gouverneur visit.
The free state visitor bus does not serve Gouverneur.
What to Bring
Photo identification for everyone over sixteen, and the visit does not proceed without it.
Phones, bags and electronics stay in the car.
If you are bringing money, the visitor lockbox takes $50 in cash a day in total, however many of you are visiting, and it takes money orders and checks as well.
Between the Long Journeys
Six hours each way from New York City means most weeks go by without a visit.
Calls from every New York state prison have been free since August 2025, and letters and photographs fill what the calls cannot. Pigeonly sends both from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 370 with the full ZIP, so the weeks between trips are not silent ones.
