Holidays Follow the DIN Here
This is the part that differs from almost every other New York prison, so it comes first.
At most facilities that ration weekends, a holiday is the one day open to everyone, whatever the DIN. At Greene it is not. NYSDOCCS states that weekend and holiday visits are divided by the last digit of the incarcerated individual’s DIN, and the dated calendar assigns each holiday to a group:
- July 4 falls to the 5 to 9 group.
- September 7 falls to the 0 to 4 group.
So a family whose DIN ends in 3 cannot plan on July 4 as a catch-up date. Check the holiday on the calendar the same way you would check a weekend.
Which Weekends Are Yours
The groups are 0 to 4 and 5 to 9, by the last digit of the DIN, and a whole weekend goes to one group. Saturday and Sunday are not split between them.
Because the groups alternate, a family gets roughly every other weekend, and a missed one pushes the next to a fortnight later.
NYSDOCCS publishes a dated visitation calendar for Greene on the facility’s own page, revised August 2026, and that document is the authority on which weekends and which holidays belong to which group.
The Arrival Window
General population visits run 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and Greene publishes both ends of the arrival window:
| Time |
|---|
| Earliest arrival | 7:30 AM |
| Visiting starts | 9:00 AM |
| Latest arrival | 2:00 PM |
| Visiting ends | 3:30 PM |
Arriving before 7:30 does not get you in sooner. Arriving after 2:00 does not get you in at all, even though the room stays open another hour and a half.
Greene allows one visit per day, so the day you arrive on is the visit you get.
Special Housing Visits on Saturday Evenings
Anyone in the Special Housing Unit or Residential Rehabilitation Unit at Greene is visited on a different schedule entirely:
- Saturdays, 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM
- Latest arrival 7:30 PM
- One non-legal visit per seven-day period
No other prison in this guide publishes an evening session. If the person you visit moves into special housing, the daytime schedule above stops applying and this is the one that counts, so confirm their status before you travel.
Three Visitors, and the Under Fives
Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five, who does not count toward the three.
A child of five or older does count, so three adults and a six year old is a group of four and will not fit.
How a Visit Is Arranged
Nothing needs booking for a regular visit. Under NYSDOCCS rules you can visit during visiting hours with proper photo identification, as long as the person inside agrees to the visit.
On a first visit, staff take your photograph for the visitor identification system and you sign a statement agreeing to the visiting rules. The early arrival window helps here.
Some visitors need advance written approval: people on probation or parole, NYSDOCCS staff, volunteers, contract workers, and anyone with past or pending criminal cases.
Children are straightforward. Their own children can visit without written permission where the parent’s name is on the birth certificate. A child under eighteen visiting without a parent or guardian needs the parent’s written permission.
Getting to Coxsackie, and the Right Gate
Coxsackie sits in the Hudson Valley, about half an hour south of Albany.
| From | Approximate journey |
|---|
| Albany | About thirty minutes |
| Kingston | About forty five minutes |
| New York City | About two hours |
| Syracuse | About two and a half hours |
Two state prisons are in this village. Greene is at 165 Plank Road. Coxsackie Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison, is at 11260 Route 9W. Set the satnav to the street, not the village.
The free state visitor bus does not serve Greene.
What to Bring
Photo identification for everyone over sixteen, and the visit does not proceed without it.
Phones, bags and electronics stay in the car.
If you are bringing money, the visitor lockbox takes $50 in cash a day in total, however many of you are visiting, and it takes money orders and checks as well.
On the Weekends That Are Not Yours
With weekends and holidays both following the DIN, roughly half the calendar is closed to any one family.
Calls from every New York state prison have been free since August 2025, and letters and photographs land on the days you cannot come. Pigeonly sends both from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 975 with the right ZIP, so the off weekends are not silent ones.
