Can I visit Mid-State Correctional Facility on any weekend?
Yes. Mid-State runs no weekend rota, so every weekend and weekday holiday is open to every incarcerated person. The limit is two visits a week, not which weekend it is.

Mid-State takes visits on weekends and weekday holidays, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with the last arrival at 2:15 PM. The good news is the calendar: unlike several New York prisons, Mid-State reserves no weekends for particular groups, so every one of them is open to you. The limit is the number of visits instead, capped at two a week.
Worth saying first, because it is not true everywhere in New York and it is the question families arrive with.
Mid-State runs no weekend rota. Its dated schedule states that visitation is available on holidays and weekends for all incarcerated individuals, with no split by name or by number. Whatever weekend suits you, the prison is open to you.
That is unusual in this part of the state. Several New York prisons divide their weekends between halves of the population, so a family can turn up on a perfectly ordinary Saturday and be turned away. Marcy Correctional Facility, five street numbers up the same road, does exactly that, alternating weekends between DINs ending 0 to 4 and 5 to 9.
Mid-State does not. The calendar is not the constraint here.
The constraint is the count. Mid-State allows two visits per week.
So the trade against its neighbour runs both ways. At Marcy you can visit as often as you like on a day that belongs to your group, and half the weekends do not. At Mid-State every weekend is yours and you get two visits in it.
For a family living locally, Mid-State’s rule is the easier one to plan around. For a family making one long trip and wanting a full day of it, Marcy’s suits better.
Visits run 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, which is the earliest opening of the two prisons on this road.
The latest you can arrive is 2:15 PM. That is also earlier than Marcy, which closes arrivals at 2:30 PM, and the fifteen minutes catch people who have visited both.
| Mid-State | Marcy | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens | 8:00 AM | 8:30 AM |
| Closes | 3:00 PM | 3:00 PM |
| Latest arrival | 2:15 PM | 2:30 PM |
| Weekend rota | none | DIN 0-4 / 5-9 |
| Visit limit | two a week | none within a day |
Read that table before a first visit to either one.
Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five, who does not count toward the three.
A child of five or older does count, so three adults and a six year old is a group of four and does not fit.
Nothing needs booking for a regular visit. Under NYSDOCCS rules you can visit during visiting hours with proper photo identification, as long as the person inside agrees to the visit.
On a first visit, staff take your photograph for the visitor identification system and you sign a statement agreeing to the visiting rules. Allow a little extra time on that first trip.
Some visitors need advance written approval: people on probation or parole, NYSDOCCS staff, volunteers, contract workers, and anyone with past or pending criminal cases.
Children are straightforward. Their own children can visit without written permission where the parent’s name is on the birth certificate. A child under eighteen visiting without a parent or guardian needs the parent’s written permission.
The prison is in the village of Marcy, on the edge of Utica in the Mohawk Valley.

Set the satnav to 9005 Old River Road. Marcy Correctional Facility is 9000, on the same road, and the street number is the only thing that separates the two entrances.
The free state visitor bus does not serve Oneida County. It runs to 18 prisons and neither Mid-State nor Marcy is among them.
Photo identification for everyone over sixteen, and the visit does not proceed without it.
Phones, bags and electronics stay in the car.
If you are bringing money, the visitor lockbox takes $50 in cash a day in total, however many of you are visiting, and it takes money orders and checks as well.
Two visits a week is a generous allowance on paper and a hard one to use if you live any distance away.
Calls from every New York state prison have been free since August 2025, and letters and photographs cover the weeks nobody travels. Pigeonly sends both from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 2500 the way Mid-State expects, so the gaps are not empty ones.
