Which Weekends Belong to You
Settle this first, because it decides whether the trip is possible at all.
NYSDOCCS states it on the schedule: weekend visits are divided into specific segments of the population by the last number of the incarcerated individual’s DIN, and the schedule alternates odd and even.
So the number ending the DIN puts a family in one of two groups, and the groups take turns. Roughly half the weekends on any given month’s calendar are not available to you.
Weekday holidays are the exception. The schedule says holidays are open to all incarcerated individuals, so those dates work whatever the DIN.
NYSDOCCS publishes a dated visitation calendar for Mohawk on the facility’s own page, revised August 2026, and that document is the authority on which weekend belongs to which group.
Seven Hours, When the Day Is Yours
Visits run 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
That is a seven hour window, and it is longer than either of the other Oneida County prisons offers:
| Mohawk | Marcy | Mid-State |
|---|
| Hours | 8:30 to 3:30 | 8:30 to 3:00 | 8:00 to 3:00 |
| Latest arrival | 2:30 PM | 2:30 PM | 2:15 PM |
| Visits | no cap in a day | no cap in a day | two a week |
| Weekend rule | DIN odd / even | DIN 0-4 / 5-9 | none |
Three prisons, one county, three different sets of rules. A family visiting more than one of them should read each schedule separately.
The 2:30 PM Line
The room closes at 3:30 PM. The latest you can arrive is 2:30 PM.
The hour between the cutoff and the close is not a late window. Arrive at 2:40 and the visit does not happen, whatever the DIN says about the date.
No Cap on the Day
Once you are inside a weekend that belongs to your group, there is no limit on the number of visits.
That pairs well with the seven hour window. For a family making a long journey, a qualifying weekend is a full day, not a single session.
Three Visitors, and the Under Fives
Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five, who does not count toward the three.
A child of five or older does count, so three adults and a six year old is a group of four and will not fit.
How a Visit Is Arranged
Nothing needs booking for a regular visit. Under NYSDOCCS rules you can visit during visiting hours with proper photo identification, as long as the person inside agrees to the visit.
On a first visit, staff take your photograph for the visitor identification system and you sign a statement agreeing to the visiting rules. Allow extra time on that trip.
Some visitors need advance written approval: people on probation or parole, NYSDOCCS staff, volunteers, contract workers, and anyone with past or pending criminal cases.
Children are straightforward. Their own children can visit without written permission where the parent’s name is on the birth certificate. A child under eighteen visiting without a parent or guardian needs the parent’s written permission.
Getting to Rome
Mohawk is on Route 26 at Rome, in the Mohawk Valley.
| From | Approximate journey |
|---|
| Utica | About fifteen minutes |
| Syracuse | About one hour |
| Albany | About one and a half hours |
| New York City | About four and a half hours |
| Buffalo | About three hours |
The free state visitor bus does not serve Oneida County. It runs to 18 prisons and none of Mohawk, Marcy or Mid-State is among them, so families without a car are looking at a coach to Utica and local transport from there.
What to Bring
Photo identification for everyone over sixteen, and the visit does not proceed without it.
Phones, bags and electronics stay in the car.
If you are bringing money, the visitor lockbox takes $50 in cash a day in total, however many of you are visiting, and it takes money orders and checks as well.
On the Weekends That Are Not Yours
With weekends alternating, a family sees its own roughly every other one, and no bus runs to this county.
Calls from every New York state prison have been free since August 2025, and letters and photographs land on the weekends that belong to the other group. Pigeonly sends both from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 8451 the way Mohawk expects, so the off weekends are not silent ones.
