Q
Can I turn up and visit without booking?
No. Nassau County states that walk-in visits are not permitted, and every visit has to be requested through the county's own online scheduler at least 24 hours and no more than 5 days in advance. Attorneys are the only people who may visit either by pre-scheduling or by walking in.

Q
Which days can I visit?
It depends on the building, not on you. B building and D building take visits Monday, Wednesday and Friday. E building takes visits Tuesday and Thursday. People are only visited in the building where they are housed, so find out which building first and work backwards from there.

Q
Is it Carman Avenue or Carmen Avenue?
Carman, with an A. That is the spelling on the facility's own rules document, on its accommodations form and in every contact block the Sheriff's Department publishes. The county's own Mailing Address block says Carmen, and so does the New York State Commission of Correction, which is how the wrong spelling ends up on directory sites.

Q
What happens if I miss the check-in window?
You lose the visit. Each of the five daily sessions has its own 30 minute check-in window, and the county says that failing to arrive during the window means forfeiting the visit. Seating inside a session is first come, first served, so early inside the window is better than late.

Q
Is there an inmate roster for Nassau County?
Nassau does not run one. The county points families to VINE on 1-888-VINE-4-NY, and staffs an Inmate Records line on 516-572-3802. Be careful searching online: Nassau County in Florida has a sheriff's office with a public inmate search, and it dominates results for this query.

Q
Why do I keep finding a Florida jail when I search?
Because there is also a Nassau County in Florida, near Jacksonville, and its sheriff's office publishes a searchable roster. Google leans towards it so heavily that its own summary answers the question for Florida first. If a phone number starts 904, you are in the wrong state. New York's Nassau uses 516.

Q
How many people are held there?
New York State data put the average daily population at 653 in August 2026, down about 14 per cent over the year. Roughly 77 per cent are unsentenced, so most people there are waiting on a court outcome. Nassau publishes no rated capacity, so there is no official figure for how full that is.

Q
Why is there no mail or money page in this guide?
Because Nassau County publishes neither. There is no mailing format, no photo rule, no prohibited-items list, no deposit vendor and no deposit method anywhere in its official material, and the phone vendor's own facility page lists calling only. We would rather leave those out than publish a page that tells you to ring and ask. Inmate Records on 516-572-3802 is the number for both.

Q
Does the jail hold ICE detainees?
Yes. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was added to the facility's federal agreement in 2007, and ICE carried out a detention facility compliance inspection there between April and May 2026. The jail also holds a small number of federal detainees under a US Marshals agreement.
