The 10 Minute Rule

From 1 February 2026, visitors must arrive at least 10 minutes before the visiting hour to register. There is a 5 minute grace period. Arrive 5 minutes or less before the hour and you will not visit in that session. You wait for the next one.

How Long and How Often

  • Each visit is one hour, and any part of an hour counts as a full hour.
  • People in general and close custody get two one-hour visits a week.
  • Trustees get three.
  • No more than two visitors at a time. Children sit on a visitor’s lap.

ID and Young Visitors

Bring a New York State driver’s license, a military ID, a DMV ID, or another state’s driver’s license, every time.

  • Visitors 16 or 17 need written permission from a parent or guardian, who must come with them the first time.
  • Under 16 must always come with a parent or guardian.
  • Children of the person held are admitted once approved on the first visit.

Leaving Things

Nothing is handed over in the visiting room. Anything you want to leave goes to the control room window in the lobby, where staff accept or reject it.

The Dress Code

No hooded sweatshirts, pullovers or coats of any kind, half shirts, mini skirts, short shorts or open shirts.

In the Room

A handshake, kiss or embrace at the start and end only. Hands stay on the counter, feet on the floor. Loud or vulgar talk ends the visit, and so can either side, at staff discretion. Anyone who appears under the influence will be turned away.

Monday Through Friday in Cooperstown

From Monday to Friday there are no visits at all. Pigeonly prints the letters and photos you choose on your phone and mails them to the jail in Cooperstown, so the week isn’t silent and you never buy a stamp.
