FDC Houston Visitation. Visitor Approval, Hours & Rules

Step 1. Get on the Approved Visitor List

The inmate is responsible for submitting their visitor list to unit staff. They list the names they want approved. You cannot add yourself: they have to do it from inside.

Once they submit the list, BOP runs a background check on each person. That process takes time. Don’t drive to FDC Houston assuming you’re cleared: confirm with the inmate that your name has been approved before coming.

Step 2. The BP-A629 Visitor Questionnaire

For first-time visitors at FDC Houston, you’ll need to complete BOP Form BP-A629, the Visitor Questionnaire. This form collects your personal information for the background check. The inmate’s unit officer typically provides this form, or it can be obtained by contacting the facility.

Approval is not automatic. People with felony convictions may be denied. The inmate’s case manager or unit team makes the final call.

Visiting Days and Hours

Per BOP visiting regulations for FDC Houston, visiting is conducted on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Specific visiting hours vary by housing unit assignment.

Before you go: Call (713) 221-5400 to confirm the current schedule for your loved one’s unit. Hours can shift based on facility operations, staff availability, and institutional schedules. Making that call saves a wasted trip.

What to Bring

• Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
• Nothing else: lockers are available for keys and vehicle entry passes

What You Cannot Bring In

The federal visiting rules are strict:

• No cell phones or electronic devices
• No outside food, drinks, or snacks
• No cash (vending machines inside accept approved cards in some units: confirm with the facility)
• No weapons, medications, or contraband of any kind
• No clothing in colors that conflict with inmate or staff uniforms: check with the facility for current dress code restrictions

Children Visiting

Children under 18 must be listed on the inmate’s approved visitor list and must be accompanied by an approved adult during the visit. The accompanying adult is responsible for the child’s behavior during the visit.

When You Arrive

Check in at the entrance. You’ll pass through a security screening process: metal detectors, and possibly a pat-down depending on facility protocol. Cooperate fully; anything that triggers a secondary screening could result in the visit being denied.

If the Visit Is Denied

Visitors can be denied entry for a number of reasons: not on the approved list, improper ID, dress code violation, or institutional lockdown. If you’re denied, ask for the specific reason in writing and contact the inmate’s case manager for next steps.
