Overview

Every outgoing voice call from California Rehabilitation Center is free, a statewide policy CDCR has followed since January 1, 2023. Video calls, e-messages, and tablet features are handled separately by a different vendor. CDCR’s published ViaPath-to-Securus rollout schedule, current as of June 4, 2026, doesn’t list a transition date for CRC at all, so this guide can’t confirm which provider is currently active. Call the institution directly before setting up a tablet account.

Quick Facts

  • All outgoing voice calls are free statewide since January 1, 2023, for both the incarcerated person and the person receiving the call.
  • Calls are limited to 15 minutes each, and the incarcerated person has to initiate the call.
  • CDCR's published rollout schedule for the ViaPath-to-Securus transition does not list a date for California Rehabilitation Center.
  • This guide can't confirm whether CRC currently uses ViaPath or Securus for tablets, video calls, and e-messages. Call (951) 737-2683 to ask before setting up an account.
  • Once you know the current provider, sign-up and per-message costs for video calls and e-messages depend on which vendor is active.

Voice Calls Are Free

Since January 1, 2023, CDCR has made all outgoing audio phone calls free for both incarcerated people and the families and friends they call. There’s no per-minute charge to worry about. Calls are limited to 15 minutes each, and it’s up to the incarcerated person to place the call. You can give them a number to call, but you can’t call in to them directly.

CRC’s Tablet Provider Isn’t Confirmed

CDCR awarded a new statewide telecommunications contract to Securus Technologies in February 2025, after a court ruling vacated the prior contract with ViaPath Technologies. CDCR has been rolling out the switch institution by institution, and its published schedule, current as of June 4, 2026, lists specific transition dates for many CDCR prisons. California Rehabilitation Center does not appear anywhere on that published schedule, neither as already transitioned nor as pending a future date.

What This Means for You

Since CDCR’s own schedule doesn’t answer the question, the honest answer is that this guide cannot confirm whether CRC currently uses ViaPath or Securus for video calls, e-messages, and tablet features. Call the institution directly at (951) 737-2683 and ask which platform is active before signing up for an account or buying credits, since a mistaken sign-up with the wrong provider wastes money and won’t work at the facility.

What to Ask When You Call

When you call, ask specifically: which company (ViaPath or Securus) currently runs the tablet, video call, and e-message system, whether a transition to a new provider is scheduled, and how to create a family account for whichever platform is active. Write down the name of the person you spoke with and the date, in case you need to follow up.

If CRC Has Already Transitioned to Securus

If the institution confirms Securus is active, sign up at securustech.net/cdcr for video calls, e-messages, and tablet features. Securus generally offers lower per-minute video call costs and more free monthly e-messages than the older ViaPath system.

If CRC Is Still on ViaPath

If the institution confirms ViaPath is still active, continue using your existing ViaPath account or sign up through ViaPath’s usual channel for video calls and e-messages. Ask the institution if they have an estimated future transition date, since CDCR’s schedule can be updated without much notice.

If There’s a Future Transition

If CRC does eventually transition, content stored on the old tablet system typically doesn’t carry over to the new one. Anyone who wants to keep copies of anything on a tablet should ask about printing options before a confirmed transition date, since family members can’t request prints on the incarcerated person’s behalf.
