Books, magazines, and newspapers must come directly from the publisher, a bookstore, or an established retailer like Amazon, not from you personally. Hardcover books are generally not allowed unless the Warden approves an exception.

Legal Mail

To be treated as legal mail, an envelope must be marked “Special Mail, Open only in the presence of the inmate” on the front, with the attorney or firm clearly identified as the sender. Legal mail that meets these requirements is opened only in the inmate’s presence, to check for contraband, and isn’t read. If the envelope isn’t marked this way, staff can open and read it like any other letter.
