Why There Are No In-Person Visits
As of the most recent policy confirmed for this facility, James I. Montgomery Correctional Center does not offer in-person, face-to-face visitation for general visitors. Instead, JSO routes all visitor contact through GettingOut, a video visitation platform from ViaPath Technologies. This is a facility-wide policy, not a temporary restriction, so do not plan a trip expecting a traditional visiting room.
How GettingOut Video Visitation Works
There are two ways to use GettingOut at this facility:
Home video visits: Create and get approved as a visitor on the inmate’s contact list. Once approved, the inmate initiates the video call to you from inside the facility. You’ll need a device with a camera, a stable internet connection, and the GettingOut app or website ready when the call comes in.
Onsite scheduled video visits: If you don’t have reliable internet access at home, JSO offers free scheduled video visits at the facility itself. You travel to the jail, but the visit still happens over video. It is not a face-to-face visit.
Step 1: Get Approved as a Visitor
Before any video visit can happen, you need to be an approved contact on the inmate’s visitor list. Ask the inmate to add you, or call 904-766-5076 to ask about the approval process and any paperwork required.
Step 2: Set Up Your GettingOut Account
Create an account through the GettingOut app or website. The inmate initiates the call. You do not schedule or dial in yourself, so make sure your account and device are ready in advance so you don’t miss the call.
Step 3: Choose Home or Onsite Video Visits
If you have a reliable internet connection and a camera-equipped device, home video visits let you connect without traveling. If you don’t have reliable internet access, ask about scheduling a free onsite video visit at the facility instead.
Being Ready for the Inmate’s Call
Because the inmate initiates the video call from inside the facility, you generally cannot schedule the exact time yourself. Keep your device charged, your GettingOut app open or notifications on, and be in a quiet, private space during hours when the inmate is likely to have phone and video access.
What to Bring for an Onsite Video Visit
If you’re doing a scheduled onsite video visit at the facility, bring a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID card, or passport. Arrive with enough time for security screening before your scheduled session.
Security Screening for Onsite Visits
For any onsite visit, expect to pass through security screening, which commonly includes a metal detector or magnetometer and may include a pat search. Do not bring prohibited items, including weapons, drugs, or unauthorized electronics, into the facility.
Children and Minor Visitors
Age requirements and consent rules for minor visitors on GettingOut, whether from home or onsite, vary and were not independently confirmed for this facility. Ask about minimum age, whether a minor needs to be accompanied by an approved adult, and whether proof of relationship, like a birth certificate, is required when you call 904-766-5076.
Medical Accommodations and Accessibility
If you need a disability accommodation for an onsite video visit, call ahead so staff can plan for accessible entry, seating, or other needs.
What’s Not Allowed
- No in-person, face-to-face visits are offered at this facility for general visitors
- No recording, screenshotting, or distributing video visit content outside the platform
- No visible weapons, drug paraphernalia, gang signs, or inappropriate gestures on camera
- No sharing your GettingOut login credentials with anyone else to conduct a visit on your behalf
Security and Recording
Video visitation sessions can be monitored, recorded, or reviewed by facility staff. Treat these calls the way you would an in-person visit: avoid discussing the inmate’s pending legal case, court strategy, or details that could be used against them later.
Holiday Schedule Changes
Video visitation availability, including onsite scheduling, can change around major holidays. Call 904-766-5076 close to your planned visit date to confirm scheduling has not changed.
