Narrowing to Clarinda
Open Iowa’s statewide offender search and set Location to Clarinda Correctional Facility. A name lookup on Pigeonly gives you a second check, worth having while Clarinda holds 1,058 people against a capacity of 750.
If you are not certain which prison holds them, leave Location on All. That returns where they actually are, which is more useful than confirming a guess, and Iowa moves people between prisons often.
The Name Modes, and When to Use Each
Starts With is the default and handles a partial name.
Matches requires the name exactly as recorded.
Sounds Like matches names that are pronounced the same and spelled differently. Reach for it whenever the spelling reached you second hand.
Add sex or County of Commitment to cut down a common surname. County of Commitment means where the case originated, not where the person is now.
What the Record Carries
- name, offender number, sex and age
- location, reading as Clarinda Correctional Facility
- offense
- TDD and SDD, which Iowa expands as Tentative Discharge Date and Supervision Discharge Date
- commitment date and recall date
- the most recent board decision, with type, decision, dates, any interview slot and any mandatory minimum
- a charges table with an expand control
Iowa attaches its own caution to a parole interview date: contact Board of Parole staff to confirm it rather than relying on the page.
Iowa publishes both and reconciles neither.
Clarinda’s own facility page describes capacity as approximately 1,000.
Iowa’s Daily Statistics page, on September 9, 2026, gave Clarinda a count of 1,058 against a capacity of 750, with 46 people in medical or segregation status.
So the prison describes itself as holding about a thousand while the department’s daily figures put its working capacity at 750 and its actual population above both. Both numbers come from the Iowa Department of Corrections.
The reason this belongs on a search page rather than a trivia list: a prison running 40 percent above its working capacity moves people, and a location you looked up last week may not hold this week.
A Record With Nothing In It
A record with the right name and nothing in the location, offense or date fields almost always means they have been released.
Iowa keeps released people in the database and empties those fields rather than deleting the record. It is the answer, not a fault, though it is worth a call if a release would surprise you.
Weekly or Daily, Iowa Says Both
The search disclaimer states that information is updated on a weekly basis and may change quickly. A separate Iowa DOC page tells families a transfer appears within 24 hours of the move.
Both are official and neither acknowledges the other.
At Clarinda this matters more than at most Iowa prisons. The facility is in the state’s far southwest corner, a long drive from Des Moines, Cedar Rapids or anywhere in eastern Iowa. Ring 712-695-7140 and confirm before setting off, and while you are on the line, that same number is where you can arrange a visit if the app is not an option.
When Nothing Comes Back
They are in county custody. Anyone awaiting trial or sentencing is held by a county, whose roster this search does not reach.
The spelling differs. Switch to Sounds Like, or search the surname alone.
They were released. See the blank record above.
They were transferred. Set Location to All and try again.
They are in federal custody. There are no federal prisons anywhere in Iowa, so the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) runs an entirely separate locator.
Copy the Number Down Once
The offender number and the exact legal name spelling are what everything else at Clarinda runs on.
The mail routing line needs both. A money order posted to Fort Dodge without the offender name and number, plus your own name and full address, is returned to sender. The visitor application asks for them on the first line.
All information on this page comes directly from official government and facility sources.
