Q
What are the visiting hours at Clarinda?
Four blocks on Saturday and Sunday: 8:15 to 10:15, 10:45 to 12:45, 1:15 to 3:15, and 3:45 to 5:45, with a thirty-minute intermission between each. Clarinda is the only Iowa prison that publishes its day this precisely. Video visits run Saturday and Sunday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Friday 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, in fifty-minute blocks.

Q
What if I cannot use the Ameelio app?
Clarinda is the one Iowa prison that gives every family a way round it. Its page says that if you do not have access to the app you may contact the prison directly to discuss manually scheduling an in-person visit, on 712-695-7140, asking for the incarcerated person's counselor. Most other Iowa prisons limit that route to approved attorneys and social workers, or publish no fallback at all.

Q
How many people can visit at once?
Three. Clarinda publishes the cap, which several Iowa prisons do not. Iowa's statewide policy sets the same figure of three adult visitors, with children counted against the room's seating capacity, so the two agree here.
Visitation
Q
Do visits cost anything?
No. The Iowa Department of Corrections offers both in-person and video visits at no cost to approved friends and family. Getting approved is the slow part: a paper application, posted to Mount Pleasant, with a decision inside 30 days.

Q
Where do I mail a letter?
To the person's name and offender number, then the line Clarinda Correctional Facility - 1107, then PO Box 96777, Las Vegas, NV 89193. Iowa states that non-legal mail sent directly to a prison is returned to sender, so both the Nevada address and the 1107 code matter.

Q
Where does money go?
Not to Clarinda. Iowa centralized offender banking at Fort Dodge, so money orders and cashier's checks go to the IDOC Offender Fiduciary Account, 1550 L Street, Suite B, Fort Dodge, IA 50501. Institutions no longer accept deposits at the door. Access Corrections, JPay and Western Union all handle electronic transfers.

Q
How crowded is Clarinda?
Well over capacity. Iowa's daily count on September 9, 2026 showed 1,058 people held against an operational capacity of 750, with 46 in medical or segregation status. The facility page separately describes capacity as approximately 1,000. Both figures are official and Iowa does not explain the gap between them.
