How Phone Calls Work
Kentucky River Regional Jail uses GettingOut (GTL/ViaPath) for all inmate phone calls. The inmate initiates the call from jail phones in their unit. You cannot call the inmate directly.
When the inmate calls your number, you will hear a recorded announcement that the call is coming from a correctional facility. You can accept or decline the call.
Your number must be on the inmate’s approved contact list before they can call you.
Three Ways to Accept or Pay for Calls
Collect calls: The charges go to your landline phone bill. Collect calls are more expensive than prepaid options. Most cell phones do not accept collect calls.
Prepaid account (recommended): Set up an account at gettingout.com. You deposit money into a Friends and Family account. The inmate can then call you, and the cost comes out of your balance. This gives you control over how much the inmate can spend. Prepaid domestic calls cost $0.21 per minute for most states ($0.25 per minute for in-state Kentucky calls).
Quick Connect: Leave a debit or credit card on file. When the inmate calls, follow the automated prompts to pay for that one call on the spot.
Setting Up a GettingOut Account
Go to gettingout.com and create a free account. Add the inmate to your contact list using their name and Inmate ID number, and add Kentucky River Regional Jail as the facility. Then add a credit or debit card to fund calls and other services.
For phone setup help, call GettingOut at 866-516-0115.
Video Visits and Messaging
GettingOut also offers video visits and messaging from the same account. You can schedule a remote video visit from home, or leave a voicemail message for the inmate for a flat fee. Messages and photos can also be sent directly through the gettingout.com platform.
Important Notes
Do not discuss the inmate’s pending legal case during any phone call. All calls are recorded and can be used in court. Only calls to an attorney are protected.
If the inmate does not call you, they may be in lockdown, in court, or waiting in line for the jail phones. Stick to a regular schedule and try to be available at consistent times.
