How to Visit Dixon Correctional Institute

The Fifth-Weekend Rule

This is the most important thing to know before making the drive to Jackson. Dixon Correctional Institute only conducts visits on the first four weekends of each calendar month. When a month has a fifth weekend, there are no visits.

A fifth weekend happens several times a year. Check a calendar before every visit. If the Saturday or Sunday you plan to visit falls in the fifth week of the month, the facility will not allow visits that day.

Before you leave: Call Dixon at (225) 634-1200 the morning of your visit to confirm visitation is open. Lockdowns or facility emergencies can also suspend visits without notice.

No visits on the fifth weekend of any month.

Visits are 2 hours long. Each approved visitor is permitted 2 visits per month. You may have up to 4 visitors at one time per visit.

Contact vs. Non-Contact Visits

Saturday and Sunday are contact visits. You sit across from the inmate at a table. A brief hug or handshake at the beginning and end of the visit is typically permitted, depending on the inmate’s status.

Friday visits are non-contact only. You and the inmate are separated by a barrier and speak through a phone or intercom system. No physical contact is allowed.

If you’re coming from out of town, a Saturday or Sunday visit gives you a contact visit and avoids the Friday non-contact restriction.

How to Get on the Approved Visitor List

The inmate starts the process. Here is how it works:

1. The inmate contacts their case manager or unit officer and asks to add your name to their visitor list.
2. You’ll receive a visitor application form to complete and return to the facility.
3. The facility runs a criminal background check on all prospective visitors.
4. The facility notifies the inmate whether you were approved or denied.

This process takes several weeks. Start it as early as possible. The visitor list is typically capped under Louisiana DOC rules. If you’re denied, the inmate can request a review through their case manager.

What to Wear

Louisiana DOC enforces dress code rules at all facilities. The following are not allowed:

• Clothing resembling inmate uniforms (khaki, denim, gray, orange)
• Clothing resembling staff or law enforcement uniforms
• Revealing clothing: midriff, shoulders, back, cleavage, or thighs must be covered
• Shorts or skirts above the knee
• Tight or form-fitting clothing
• Hats, sunglasses, or face coverings
• Sleeveless tops or tank tops

Wear solid-colored, non-khaki clothing with modest coverage. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.

What to Bring

• Valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID) for every adult in your group
• Small cash for vending machines
• For infants: basic necessities in a clear bag

Leave your phone, keys, wallet, food, and any electronics in your car. Items that trigger metal detectors will cause delays.

Getting There

Dixon Correctional Institute is at 5568 LA-68, Jackson, LA 70748. Jackson is a small rural town in East Feliciana Parish. GPS is reliable to the facility. Allow extra travel time from Baton Rouge (about 30 miles) and plan for gas.
