BOP Inmate Locator — bop.gov/inmateloc/

The Federal Bureau of Prisons maintains one unified database for all federal inmates across every facility. Go to bop.gov/inmateloc/ and search by:

  • Name — use the inmate’s full committed name (from their sentencing documents)
  • Register number — the 8-digit BOP number (format: XXXXX-XXX)

The result will show their current facility code. FCI Oakdale II’s code is OAD. FCI Oakdale I — located on the same campus but a separate facility — shows as OAK. If you see OAD, the person is at FCI Oakdale II.

What Is the Register Number?

Every federal inmate is assigned an 8-digit register number when they enter BOP custody. You’ll need it to send money, send mail, and set up CorrLinks email. The BOP locator displays it once you find the right person by name.

Why Someone Might Not Appear

  • Recent transfer. The BOP locator takes 24–48 hours to update after a transfer. If you know they’ve been moved to FCI Oakdale II, wait two days before searching.
  • Wrong name. Search by the committed name — the legal name from sentencing, not a nickname or alias.
  • Pre-sentencing. Inmates awaiting sentencing may be at a detention center, not a sentenced facility, and may appear differently.
  • Released. If their sentence is complete, they won’t appear as currently incarcerated.

If someone doesn’t appear in the BOP locator after 48 hours and you have reason to believe they’re at FCI Oakdale II, call (318) 335-4466. Have their full committed name and register number ready.
