The Unit-by-Unit Visitation Schedule

York County Jail’s published visitation schedule assigns each housing unit its own day and time slot each week:

All visitors must arrive 30 minutes before the listed visitation time to sign up. If you don’t know which unit your family member is housed in, call (207) 324-1113 and ask, since that determines your visiting day and time.

Contact, Non-Contact, and Video Visits

York County Jail uses three types of visitation: contact, non-contact, and video conference. According to the Sheriff’s Office’s published rules, inmates in Special Management, segregation, and C-2 First Floor housing receive non-contact visits only. Attorneys, clergy, and counselors may receive contact visits. Everyone else is generally assigned video conferencing, with an opportunity for contact visitation on the first and third weekends of the month. Since visitation technology can change (York County moved to a kiosk and tablet system for mail in December 2023), call (207) 324-1113 to confirm whether this contact/non-contact/video breakdown is still accurate for your family member’s specific unit.

Dress Code and Conduct Rules

The Sheriff’s Office’s published rules set out a specific dress code and conduct standard for visitors:

• The body must be fully clothed at all times. Bare feet aren’t permitted.
• Halter tops, tank tops, tube tops, and miniskirts are prohibited.
• Hats, caps, and hair curlers may not be worn.
• Clothing similar to what inmates wear is not allowed on visitors.
• Visitors may wear wedding bands, medical alert tags, and religious medallions, but no other jewelry or personal items are allowed into the visit.
• Visitors and inmates must stay seated for the entire visit and may not cross the table or pass anything between them.
• Visitors and inmates may not speak with other visitors or inmates in the visitation area.
• Loud, rude, or profane behavior, or any physical or verbal confrontation, results in losing visiting privileges.

ID and Sign-In Requirements

Visitors must show valid photo identification before being allowed to visit. There’s no advance visitor application to file. Instead, visitors complete a sign-in form at the jail itself before each visit, which asks for the visitor’s date of birth, home address, and relationship to the inmate. Visitors will also go through a metal detector, and refusing this screening means the visit is denied.

Rules for Children and Minors

Visitors under 18 aren’t allowed in for visits unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and they’re subject to all the same visitation rules as adults. No more than one adult and one child are allowed per inmate per visit, and children are defined as 12 years old or younger for this purpose. Visitors with a baby may not bring items for the baby into the visit. It’s the visitor’s responsibility to supervise any children closely; a disruptive child means the visitor and child will be asked to leave.

What’s Not Allowed

• Visitors are not allowed to bring any items to or from visitation, beyond wedding bands, medical alert tags, and religious medallions.
• Cameras and cell phones aren’t allowed inside the jail without prior approval from the Jail Superintendent.
• The jail is smoke-free. Tobacco products and lighting materials are considered contraband and must stay outside.
• Anyone with pending charges, on probation, or a convicted felon is not allowed to visit without prior approval from the Jail Superintendent or designee.
• Anyone who was previously incarcerated at York County Jail or any other facility may not visit until 30 days after their release.
• Visitors who appear to be under the influence of intoxicants will not be permitted to visit.

Violating any visitation rule can mean losing that visit and possibly future ones. The Visitation Officer can deny or terminate a visit for valid cause.

If Someone Was Recently Booked

New inmates must wait 72 hours after booking before their first visit is allowed. If your family member was recently arrested, call (207) 324-1113 to confirm when a visit can be scheduled, or see the inmate search guide for how to confirm someone is currently in custody.

Special Visits

The published rules note that visits from legal counsel and clergy are treated differently from standard visits, including for inmates in disciplinary segregation, who may otherwise be denied a routine visit. Why You Should Still Call Ahead

This schedule and rule set come directly from the Sheriff’s Office’s own published materials, which is more detail than many county jails make available. But York County Jail has made real operational changes since these materials were published, including discontinuing personal mail in December 2023 in favor of a kiosk and tablet system. Because changes like that can also affect visitation technology and scheduling, call (207) 324-1113 before you travel, especially if you’re coming from outside the immediate area, to confirm the unit schedule and visit type are still accurate.
