How Phone Calls Work at Craven CI
The person inside dials your number from a facility phone. The call goes through ViaPath/GTL. For the call to connect, your number must be registered in an AdvancePay account and the account must have funds.
If your number is not registered or there are no funds in the account, the call will not go through. Set up AdvancePay before expecting the first call.
Setting Up AdvancePay
AdvancePay is your prepaid calling account through ViaPath/GTL. Here is how to set it up:
Go to connectnetwork.com and create a free account, or call 800-483-8314.
Add the phone number you want to receive calls at.
Add funds to the account. You can pay by card online or by phone.
The person inside can now call your number and the charges will draw from your account.
You can manage your account, add funds, and add or remove numbers at connectnetwork.com or through the ConnectNetwork app.

A 15-minute call costs $1.50 in call charges before any applicable taxes or fees. Calls end automatically at the 15-minute mark.
Monitoring and Recording
All phone calls at Craven CI are monitored and recorded. Do not discuss anything on the phone that you would not want reviewed by facility staff. This is standard at all NC DAC facilities. Attorney calls may have different handling. Contact the facility for details on privileged communications.
What Numbers Can Be Called
The person inside can only call numbers that are registered in your AdvancePay account. Calls to unregistered numbers will not connect. To add a number, log in to connectnetwork.com or call 800-483-8314.
There is no collect-call option at NC DAC facilities using ViaPath. AdvancePay is the required method for receiving calls.
Video Visits
If you prefer a video visit over a phone call, or if in-person visits are not possible right now, video visits are available through the GettingOut Visits app (GTL/ViaPath) at sso.gtlconnect.com.
To use video visits, you must be on the approved in-person visitor list at Craven CI. Create an account at sso.gtlconnect.com, find Craven Correctional Institution, and follow the scheduling prompts. Video visits are a good option while you are waiting for in-person visitor approval or if you live far from Vanceboro.

Adding Funds to AdvancePay

If the person says they tried to call but it did not go through, check these things:

Does the account have a positive balance?
Is the number blocked for any reason?
Log in to connectnetwork.com or call ViaPath support at 877-650-4249 to check account status. Sometimes a number gets blocked after a call is flagged. If you believe a number was blocked in error, contact ViaPath to request a review.
What Happens After a Transfer
Because Craven CI is an intake facility, the person will likely transfer to a permanent NC DAC facility within 3 to 4 weeks. Phone calls continue through ViaPath/GTL at the new facility. Your AdvancePay account and registered numbers carry over. You do not need to start over, but check that the account is still active after the transfer.
