Processing stops 30 minutes before the session ends. If you arrive after 2:30 p.m. on a weekend or holiday, you may not be admitted for a visit. On weekends, processing also pauses at 9:15 a.m. to clear the 10:00 a.m. count. If you arrive during this window, wait in your vehicle until processing resumes.
These hours come from BUX 5267.09A, the FCC Butner Visiting Regulations effective April 1, 2026. Call (919) 575-5000 before any trip to confirm nothing has changed.
Note on weekday hours: An older A&O handbook listed Thursday and Friday evening visits and Monday morning visits. Those hours are NOT in the current 2026 visiting regulations. Do not rely on outdated information. Call to confirm before you travel.
Who Can Visit
Up to 3 adults (age 16 and older) may visit at one time. There is no limit on the number of children under 16. To visit, you must be on the inmate’s approved visitor list. If you are not already approved, the inmate submits a visitor request form to the unit team. Allow time for the background check to clear before your first visit.
Getting There
FCI Butner Low is located off Old Highway 75 in Butner, NC 27509. The facility does not publish a specific street number online. Call (919) 575-5000 to get driving directions before your trip. Butner is in Granville County, roughly 35 miles north of Raleigh. Several hotels are available in the Durham and Henderson, NC areas for families traveling from out of state.
What ID to Bring
All visitors age 16 and older must present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include:
- Driver’s license or state-issued ID card
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- U.S. Military ID
- Tribal photo ID
Expired IDs are not accepted. Altered IDs are not accepted. If you have a medical device that affects metal detector screening (pacemaker, orthopedic implant), bring a physician’s letter explaining it.
Dress Code
The dress code at FCI Butner Low is strictly enforced. Staff may turn you away or ask you to change before admitting you. Here is what is and is not allowed.
Not allowed:
- Khaki or camouflage clothing (any shade of ranger green included)
- Shorts or dresses shorter than knee length
- Revealing, form-fitting, or see-through clothing
- Sleeveless tops
- Open-toe shoes
- Outerwear worn in the visiting room
- Watches
- Hats or caps
- Sunglasses
- Paper currency (cash)
- Large purses or wallets
- Cameras or recording devices
- Cosmetics brought inside
- Gum, candy, or tobacco/nicotine products
Allowed items you may bring inside:
- Up to $20 in coins in a clear plastic bag no larger than 8 inches by 6 inches by 2 inches
- One wedding ring set
- One religious medallion
- One pair of stud earrings
- One piece of approved religious headwear
- Sanitary products for personal use
For infants 3 years old and under: You may bring formula, diapers, baby food, a receiving blanket, and a pacifier. Check with the facility on specific quantity limits before your visit. Strollers are not permitted inside.
Security Screening
All visitors pass through security screening before entering the visiting area. This includes:
- Magnetometer (metal detector)
- X-ray screening of personal items
- Pat search if triggered by the magnetometer or at staff discretion
Visitors who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs are denied entry and asked to leave BOP property. Attempting to bring in contraband is a federal crime.
What Is Not Allowed
Contraband: It is a federal felony to introduce drugs, alcohol, weapons, or other unauthorized items into a federal prison. Anyone caught attempting to do so will be detained and referred for prosecution.
Exchanges: You cannot hand anything to the inmate or accept anything from the inmate during the visit unless staff have given prior written approval. This includes food purchased from the vending machines if the inmate handles it directly. Follow staff instructions on how vending works during your visit.
No phone use: Personal phones are not permitted in the visiting room.
Rules for Children
Children under 16 may visit without counting toward the adult visitor limit. Children must remain with their approved adult at all times. Children cannot run, throw objects, or engage in disruptive behavior during the visit. All children must wear appropriate footwear inside the facility.
Minors not accompanied by a parent: If someone other than the child’s parent or legal guardian is bringing a minor to visit, check with FCI Butner Low in advance at (919) 575-5000. The BOP may require a notarized permission form from the non-incarcerated parent or guardian, along with the child’s birth certificate.
Special Visits and Attorney Visits
Attorneys visiting a client at FCI Butner Low are not subject to the same visitor list process as personal visitors, but they must contact the facility in advance to schedule. Attorney-client visits are confidential and calls are not recorded.
Special visits outside normal hours (for clergy, long-distance family, or other circumstances) must be requested in advance through the unit team. The Warden or designee must approve special visits.
After the Visit
