How NC DAC Mail Routing Works
Most NC state prisons, including Forsyth Correctional Center, use TextBehind to process incoming personal mail. When you send a letter or photo, it goes to TextBehind’s facility in Maryland first. TextBehind scans the contents, checks for prohibited material, and forwards a digital or printed copy to the person at Forsyth.
This means your letter does not travel directly from your mailbox to Winston-Salem. It routes through Phoenix, MD first. That is normal and expected.
Personal Mail Address (Letters and Photos)
Send personal letters and photos to this address:
Forsyth Correctional Center
[Full Legal Name, OPUS Number]
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
Put each element on its own line exactly as shown. The OPUS number goes on the same line as the person’s name. Leave it off and your mail may not reach them.
Find the OPUS number with the NC OPI inmate search if you do not have it.
Books and Publications: Direct to the Facility
Books, magazines, and other publications do not go through TextBehind. Send them directly to:
[Full Legal Name, OPUS Number]
Forsyth Correctional Center
307 Craft Drive
Winston-Salem, NC 27105
Books must be sent by an approved publisher or retailer, not by hand. Order from a publisher, Amazon, or other approved retailer and ship directly to the facility address above. Do not bring books in person or mail them in a personal envelope.
The NC DAC inmate package program at ncinmatepackage.com is another option for sending approved packages to Forsyth residents.
Legal Mail: Directly to the Facility
Legal mail (from attorneys, courts, or government agencies) does not go through TextBehind. Send legal mail directly to:
[Full Legal Name, OPUS Number]
Forsyth Correctional Center
307 Craft Drive
Winston-Salem, NC 27105
Legal mail is treated differently from personal mail. It is typically opened in the presence of the person rather than scanned and forwarded. If you are an attorney sending privileged correspondence, contact the facility at (336) 896-7041 to confirm the current procedure.
What Happens to Your Mail
After TextBehind receives your letter or photo, it is scanned and reviewed. Prohibited content is rejected. Approved content is processed and forwarded. Processing times vary but are typically a few business days from the time TextBehind receives your envelope.
You will not receive a delivery confirmation from TextBehind by default. If the person has not mentioned receiving something after about a week, check with them on their next call or during a visit.
Photos: What Is Accepted
You can include photos in personal mail sent through TextBehind. Follow these guidelines:
- Standard photo paper or printed photos are accepted
- Photos must not contain nudity or sexually explicit content
- Photos must not show weapons, drugs, alcohol, or gang-related symbols or hand signs
- Photos must not contain coded or hidden messages
If you are unsure whether a photo is acceptable, call Forsyth at (336) 896-7041 before sending.
What Is Not Allowed
Do not send:
- Cash or checks. Use ConnectNetwork to put money on the account instead.
- Items with glitter, stickers, confetti, or attachments. These are routinely rejected.
- Sexually explicit content of any kind.
- Content that promotes violence, gang activity, or drug use.
- Envelopes with perfume, cologne, or lipstick.
- Envelopes with coded or hidden writing inside the envelope flap or elsewhere.
- Books or packages sent directly from you. Books must come from an approved publisher or retailer.
Mail that violates these rules will be returned or confiscated. The person inside will typically be notified of a rejection.
Packages
NC DAC allows approved packages through the official NC inmate package program at ncinmatepackage.com. This program lets you order from a list of approved items for delivery to the person at Forsyth. Do not attempt to mail packages on your own outside of this program.
Return Address
Always write your full return address on every envelope. If the mail cannot be delivered for any reason, a return address allows it to come back to you instead of being discarded.
