Macon County is a small mountain county in the far southwest corner of North Carolina, bordering Georgia and the Nantahala National Forest. The county seat of Franklin sits at roughly 2,100 feet elevation in the Little Tennessee River valley. The detention center has operated since 1999 and serves both pretrial detainees and people serving shorter sentences locally. Because Macon County is rural and small, the facility has a 75-bed capacity, which is much smaller than the large regional jails found in metro areas. Families traveling to visit from outside the region should plan for the mountain drive, especially in winter when road conditions on U.S. 441 and nearby routes can be challenging.
