How to Search the NC OPI

Go to webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view. Enter the person’s first and last name. If you already have their OPUS Number, enter it for a more exact match.

Nash Correctional Institution is a NC DAC state prison. Anyone sentenced to NC DAC custody and housed there appears in the OPI under the facility name.

What the Search Shows

A result displays the person’s full legal name, OPUS Number, and current facility. It may also include custody level, projected release date, and other basic information NC DAC makes public.

The OPUS Number is the most important piece. Save it. You need it for:

• Every deposit through ViaPath/ConnectNetwork
• Every piece of mail through TextBehind
• The visitor application form
• Any inquiry with the facility

What Each Field Means

• Name: Full legal name as recorded by NC DAC.
• OPUS Number: The unique state ID assigned to each person in NC DAC custody. Required for all deposits, mail, and visitor applications.
• Current Facility: The prison where the person is currently housed. Confirm this reads “Nash Correctional Institution” before visiting or sending anything.
• Custody Level: Nash CI is a medium-security facility. Custody level affects visiting procedures. See the visitation guide for details.
• Projected Release Date: An estimate based on the current sentence. Subject to change based on hearings, credits, or reclassification.

Daily Roster and Search Update Timing

The NC OPI database updates regularly, but records from a new sentence, transfer, or booking can take one to two days to appear. If you recently learned the person was sent to Nash CI and the search returns nothing, wait a day and try again.

The search does not show a real-time roster or daily update log. It reflects NC DAC records as they are processed. For the most current location, call Nash CI at (252) 459-4455.

Why Someone Might Not Appear

A few situations can cause a record to be missing or to show the wrong location:

• Recently sentenced or transferred: Records can take one to two days to update after a move.
• Spelling variation: Try alternate first or last name spellings.
• Held temporarily at another facility: Medical transport, court appearances, or intake can show a temporary location.
• In county jail custody: If the person was recently sentenced and has not yet transferred to a state facility, they may still show in a county system.

If none of these apply, call Nash CI at (252) 459-4455 and ask whether the person is housed there.

Confirm Before You Visit or Send Anything

People can be moved for medical care, court appearances, or reclassification. Always check the OPI before making a trip or sending a deposit to confirm the person is still at Nash CI.
