NCCIW Inmate Search. Find Someone with the NC OPI Offender Search

Confirm they are at NCCIW and get the OPUS Number you need for visits, money, and mail.

Overview

To find someone at NC Correctional Institution for Women, use the NC Department of Adult Correction Offender Public Information (OPI) search at webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view. It is the state’s free official lookup tool. Search by name or OPUS Number. Once you find the person, write down their OPUS Number. You will need it for every money deposit, piece of mail, and the visitor application form.

Quick Facts

  • Official tool: NC DAC Offender Public Information (OPI) at webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view.
  • Search by first and last name, or by OPUS Number if you already have it.
  • NCCIW is a NC state prison, so anyone serving a NC sentence there appears in the OPI search.
  • Write down the OPUS Number: you need it for deposits, mail, and the visitor application.
  • If a record does not appear right away, give it one to two days after a recent sentence or transfer.
  • The NC OPI search is free. No account needed.
  • NCCIW is also the intake and diagnostic center for all women entering the NC prison system, so a record may show up before a long-term housing assignment is finalized.

Go to webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view. Enter the person’s first and last name. If you already have their OPUS Number, you can search with that for a more exact match.

NCCIW is a North Carolina state prison. Anyone serving a NC DAC sentence there will appear in the OPI database. Because NCCIW also serves as the diagnostic entry point for all women entering the NC prison system, a person may show up in the search while still in initial classification, before a permanent housing assignment is made.

What the Search Shows

A result shows the person’s name, OPUS Number, and current facility. It may also include custody level, projected release date, and other basic information. The OPUS Number is the key piece. Save it. You will use it for every deposit through ConnectNetwork, every piece of mail through TextBehind, and the visitor application form.

What Each Field Means

  • Name: Full legal name as recorded by NC DAC.
  • OPUS Number: The unique ID assigned to each person in NC state custody. Required for all contact and deposit transactions.
  • Current Facility: The prison where the person is housed right now. Confirm this reads “NC Correctional Institution for Women” before visiting or sending anything.
  • Custody Level: Close, medium, minimum, or reentry. Custody level affects visiting procedures. See the visitation guide for details.
  • Projected Release Date: An estimated date based on the sentence. Subject to change.

If You Cannot Find the Person

A few situations can cause someone to not appear or to show a different facility:

  • Recently sentenced or transferred: Records can take one to two days to update. Try again the next day.
  • Spelling variation: Try alternate spellings of the first or last name.
  • Still in county custody: If the person was just sentenced and has not yet transferred from the county jail, the NC DAC record may still be processing.
  • Temporarily moved: Medical transport, court appearances, or intake processing at NCCIW can show a different or incomplete location temporarily.

If none of these apply, call NCCIW directly at (919) 873-5452 and ask whether the person is in custody there.

NCCIW as an Intake Facility

NCCIW is the diagnostic and classification hub for every woman sentenced to NC state prison. That means a woman coming from a county jail will first arrive at NCCIW before being assigned to a long-term facility. During this intake period, she may appear in the OPI search as housed at NCCIW even if her permanent assignment will be elsewhere. If the person was recently sentenced, confirm with the facility whether they are still in classification or have received a permanent housing unit.

After You Find Them

Once you have the OPUS Number, you are ready for the next steps:
