Most New York state prisons publish a post box for incarcerated mail. Bedford Hills does not, so letters go to the street address that also takes visitors. That makes it one of the simplest addresses in the state, with one catch worth reading before you write it out.
Address a letter like this.
Jane Smith, 12G3456
Bedford Hills Correctional Facility
247 Harris Road
Bedford Hills, NY 10507-2400
Name and DIN together on the first line. The DIN is the Department Identification Number the state lookup returns, and mail without it cannot be sorted to a person.
There is no post box. Most New York prisons publish a separate box for incarcerated mail. Bedford Hills does not, on either the family-facing page or the state’s own facility listing, so the street address takes letters as well as visitors.
Which puts the weight on the number. Three doors up, at 250 Harris Road, is Taconic Correctional Facility, which is also a New York state prison for women, in the same village, with a ZIP that differs only in its last four digits.
| Bedford Hills | Taconic | |
|---|---|---|
| Street | 247 Harris Road | 250 Harris Road |
| ZIP | 10507-2400 | 10507-2497 |
| Phone | 914-241-3100 | 914-241-3010 |
Write 247, and write the facility name in full underneath it.
Four things, and it is the last one that gets letters returned.
Mail arriving without a clearly identifiable sender and return address is treated as contraband and is not delivered. That is the department’s wording and it applies across New York.
Worth stating, because it is no longer true everywhere.
Mail here is opened and inspected at the prison, checked for cash, cheques, money orders, printed material and contraband, and then handed over. Your person holds the actual envelope and the actual paper.
Several New York county jails have moved the other way, sending personal mail to a scanning centre in another city and delivering it as an image on a tablet. State prisons have not. What you wrote is what she gets.
The department publishes this list and it applies statewide.
| Refused | Note |
|---|---|
| Polaroid photographs | The format, whatever the picture is of |
| Nude photographs | |
| Postage stamps | Do not enclose stamps for a reply |
| Letters from other people | Third-party mail, with an exception for children |
| Tape, glue or paste | Including on newspaper clippings |
| Cash, cheques and money orders | These have their own address |
There is also a paper limit: five pages of printed or photocopied material per letter, with newspaper clippings counting one page each. Legal papers for an active case can go beyond it only with the Superintendent’s written approval in advance, and no more than once every four months.
Ordinary prints are welcome. Send plenty, within the rules above.
Polaroids are refused anywhere in New York, because of the format rather than the subject. An instant print has a thick backing that can hide things, so the whole category is excluded.
Order prints from a photo service or run them off at home on photo paper, and keep anything written on the back to a name and a date.
Not in the envelope. The inspection is specifically looking for it.
Money orders and cheques go to the JPay lockbox, PO Box 531190, Miami, Florida 33153, with a JPay deposit slip, free to post and capped at $999.99 per transaction. The visitor lockbox inside the prison takes up to $50 cash per person per day, which is easy here given how often visiting is open.
Families can no longer post or carry a package in. Everything arrives directly from an approved vendor by USPS, FedEx or UPS.
The allowances are two non-food packages a year and three food packages a month, with food capped at a combined 40 pounds. DOCCS publishes a disapproved vendor list, and Directive #4911 carries the detail.
Mail from a lawyer or a court is privileged and runs under Directive #4421 rather than the general correspondence rules.
It is opened in front of the person it is addressed to, not in the mailroom. A relative cannot send ordinary mail under a legal label, and trying it puts the letter at risk rather than speeding it up.
Bedford Hills has no P.O. box, so every letter goes to 247 Harris Road. Pigeonly prints and mails your letters and photos there with the name, the DIN and the facility already filled in.
