Every Day, Including Holidays
Bedford Hills visits daily, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
When New York reorganised weekday visiting on 7 September 2026, it sorted its prisons into groups. Most got one weekday. A few got weekday holidays only. Three went to daily visiting including holidays, and Bedford Hills is one of them, alongside Clinton and Shawangunk.
So Christmas Day, Thanksgiving and a holiday Monday are all visiting days here. That is not true at most New York state prisons and it is worth knowing if you work a standard week.
The 3:00 PM Arrival Line
Visiting runs to 3:30 PM but arrivals close at 3:00 PM.
Half an hour is not much of a visit, so treat the mid afternoon as a fallback and not a plan. If you are coming after work, aim to be through the door with time to spare rather than at the edge of the cutoff.
Weekends Run by Surname
Weekday visiting is open to everyone. Weekends are split by the first letter of the surname.
The prison publishes a twelve month calendar marking each weekend date as A to L, M to Z, or open to everybody. It gets revised during the year, and the version in force now was reissued in August 2026.
Check the current calendar before a weekend trip. A schedule saved last winter may no longer be the one in force, and this is a prison where a wasted Saturday is entirely avoidable.
Three Visitors and One Small Child
Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five.
The child under five does not count against the three, which is more generous than most New York prisons and makes a difference for families bringing grandchildren.
The First Thirty Days Are Different
Someone newly arrived is on reception status for up to 30 days, and the visiting rule is narrower during it.
A person on reception status may be visited on their approved weekend visit day only, and not on the full daily schedule. So in those first weeks the weekend calendar and her surname decide the day, and the everyday access begins once reception ends.
This catches families out precisely when they most want to come, so it is worth knowing in advance.
Special Housing, and an Earlier Cutoff
Someone in the Special Housing Unit may have one non-legal visit within any seven day period.
Hours are the same, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, but the latest arrival is 2:45 PM instead of 3:00 PM. Fifteen minutes, easy to miss, and enough to lose the visit.
There Is No Visitor List Here
Nothing is filed before a first visit to a New York state prison.
No application form. No approved-visitor list. No background check and no waiting period. Bring valid photo identification, and the person you are visiting has to consent to the visit.
Three groups need written permission from the Superintendent beforehand: former incarcerated people, anyone on probation or parole, and DOCCS employees.
Overcrowding, and the Hundred Mile Rule
If the visiting room fills, the prison can shorten visits, and there is an order to it.
Volunteers are asked first. After that, visitors who live within 100 miles are ended after three hours, first in first out, before people who travelled further. Anyone visiting someone who has not had a visit in six months is considered separately before anyone is asked to leave.
Westchester, the Bronx and most of New York City are inside that hundred miles. If you are local and planning a long day at a busy weekend, plan for three hours.
Do Not Go to 250 Harris Road
This is the mistake worth guarding against.
Taconic Correctional Facility is at 250 Harris Road, in the same village, on the same road. It is also a New York state prison for women. Bedford Hills is 247.
| Bedford Hills | Taconic |
|---|
| Address | 247 Harris Road | 250 Harris Road |
| ZIP | 10507-2400 | 10507-2497 |
| Phone | 914-241-3100 | 914-241-3010 |
| Security | Maximum | Medium |
| Visiting | Daily, holidays included | Weekends and holidays only |
The phone numbers are a digit transposition of each other, and the visiting schedules are different, so arriving at the wrong one on a Wednesday means arriving at a prison that does not visit on Wednesdays.
Check the facility name on the lookup result, not only the town.
Getting to Bedford Hills
The village is in northern Westchester County, off the Saw Mill River Parkway and the Taconic State Parkway, about an hour north of Manhattan by car.
Bedford Hills has a Metro-North station on the Harlem line out of Grand Central, which makes this one of the few New York state prisons reachable without a car. Harris Road is a short distance from the station.
Between Visits
Even at a prison you can visit every day, most days are not visiting days for a family with work and school runs. Pigeonly sends letters and photos to 247 Harris Road from your phone, so the days in between still carry something.
