Overview

New York made calls from every state prison free on 1 August 2025, and Cayuga runs on that statewide system. Nothing to open, nothing to fund, no rate to watch. Three calls of up to fifteen minutes are credited each Saturday, longer calls follow, and the person inside manages the list of numbers.

Quick Facts

  • 1 Free from every New York state prison since 1 August 2025
  • 2 Three calls of up to fifteen minutes credited every Saturday
  • 3 Calls beyond the three run up to thirty minutes
  • 4 Calling window 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM
  • 5 Up to fifteen approved numbers on the list
  • 6 The person inside adds and removes numbers, not you
  • 7 Calls come out, they do not go in
  • 8 Calls are recorded, with legal calls excepted

Nothing for You to Set Up

The shortest answer on this guide: you do not have to do anything.

No account, no card to register, no balance to top up, no per minute rate. New York stopped charging families for state prison calls on 1 August 2025, and Cayuga is covered by it.

Anyone telling you to open an account to receive calls from Cayuga is working from the rules that applied before then.

The Weekly Allowance

Free callsThree per week
LengthUp to fifteen minutes each
CreditedEvery Saturday
After the threeCalls run up to thirty minutes
Window7:00 AM to 11:00 PM

The three reset weekly and do not carry over, so an unused week is gone.

The Call Comes Out

You cannot ring in. There is no number at Cayuga that connects to a person in custody, and no way to leave a message for one.

In practice that means keeping your phone reachable between 7:00 AM and 11:00 PM. With three calls in a week, a missed one is a large share of the month’s contact.

Fifteen Numbers, Their List

Each person keeps an approved call list of up to fifteen numbers, and they manage it. A family member cannot ask for a number to be added from outside.

So a changed mobile number has to reach them by letter or on a call before it can be dialled. A number nobody inside knows about is a number that does not work, however often you look at the phone.

Calls Around a One-Day Weekend

Most of this page is statewide. What shapes it at Cayuga is the visiting split.

Cayuga divides weekend days by the last digit of the DIN into odd and even, and Saturday and Sunday go to different groups. So a family gets one day each weekend, not two. Holidays are open to everyone, which helps, but they are few.

That leaves six days a week with no possible visit, and the free calls are what carry those.

Recorded, With One Exception

Calls from New York state prisons are recorded and may be monitored, with a notice at the start of each call.

Properly arranged legal calls are the exception and are not monitored. Ordinary family calls are, so speak on the basis that somebody may listen to it later.

What a Call Leaves Behind

Nothing, which is the whole problem with it.

Forty five minutes a week across three calls, and when it ends there is nothing on the shelf. A letter gets read twice and a photograph goes on a wall. Pigeonly sends both to Cayuga from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 1186 with the DIN in place, so the days between visits still hold something.

Families Also Ask

6 of 10 questions

Q

How much do calls from Cayuga Correctional Facility cost?

Nothing. New York made calls from every state prison free to families on 1 August 2025. There is no per minute rate and no account for a family to fund.

Phone Calls
Q

How many calls a week are free?

Three calls of up to fifteen minutes each, credited every Saturday. Calls after those three run up to thirty minutes. The allowance does not roll over from week to week.

Phone Calls
Q

When can they call?

Between 7:00 AM and 11:00 PM. Calls are placed from inside only, so your phone needs to be reachable during that window.

Phone Calls
Q

Can I call them?

No. Calls go out only. There is no number at Cayuga that connects to a person in custody and no way to leave a message.

Phone Calls
Q

How do I get my number on the list?

They add it from inside. Each person keeps an approved list of up to fifteen numbers and manages it themselves, so a family member cannot request an addition from outside. Send a new number in a letter or give it on a call.

Phone Calls
Q

Do I need to set up an account?

No. Nothing to open, register or top up. Anyone telling you otherwise is working from the rules that applied before August 2025.

Phone Calls
Q

Are calls recorded?

Yes, and they may be monitored, with a notice at the start of each call. Properly arranged legal calls are the exception and are not monitored.

Phone Calls
Q

Why do calls matter more at Cayuga?

Because Cayuga gives each family one weekend day, set by whether the DIN ends odd or even, and no free visitor bus runs to Moravia. Most days of the week have no possible visit, so the phone and the post carry the contact.

Phone Calls
Q

Does money on the commissary account pay for calls?

Not any more. The balance covers commissary and secure messaging stamps, and calls are free regardless of what is on the account.

Phone Calls
Q

Is there a limit on how long a call can last?

The three free weekly calls run up to fifteen minutes each. Calls beyond those run up to thirty minutes, within the 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM window.
