Overview

Cayuga takes visits on weekends and weekday holidays, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with the latest arrival at 2:30 PM. The rule to settle first is the date. A DIN ending in an odd number visits on odd calendar dates and one ending in an even number visits on even dates, so on a normal weekend Saturday belongs to one group and Sunday to the other. Holidays are open to everyone.

Quick Facts

  • 1 Visiting hours 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM
  • 2 Latest arrival 2:30 PM
  • 3 Weekends and weekday holidays
  • 4 Odd DINs on odd dates, even DINs on even dates
  • 5 Holidays open to every DIN
  • 6 A visitor cannot come back the same day
  • 7 Three visitors, plus one child under the age of five
  • 8 The free state visitor bus does not serve Cayuga

Odd Number, Odd Date

This is the rule as NYSDOCCS publishes it for Cayuga:

On odd numbered calendar dates visitation is allowed for individuals whose DIN ends in an odd number. On even numbered calendar dates visitation is allowed for individuals whose DIN ends in an even number.

If the DIN ends in 7, your dates are the 1st, 3rd, 5th and so on. If it ends in 4, yours are the 2nd, 4th, 6th and so on. Zero counts as even.

Nothing to look up and no group letter to remember. The date on the calendar and the last digit of the number are enough.

Why You Get One Day of the Weekend

A Saturday and the Sunday after it are consecutive dates, so one is odd and the other even. That means on a normal weekend Saturday goes to one group and Sunday to the other.

The two groups also swap from week to week. If Saturday the 3rd is yours, the following Saturday is the 10th and belongs to the other group, and your day that weekend is Sunday the 11th.

So plan on one day each weekend, alternating between Saturday and Sunday.

The Month-End Tie-Break

There is one exception, and the Cayuga schedule prints it:

If consecutive odd calendar days fall on a weekend, the 2nd day will be an EVEN visit day.

A month with 31 days is followed by the 1st, so two odd dates can land together. When that pair falls on a Saturday and Sunday, the Sunday switches to even. An odd DIN keeps the Saturday, and an even DIN gets the Sunday.

Check the dated calendar on the NYSDOCCS Cayuga page before a journey at the turn of a month.

Holidays Belong to Everyone

The Cayuga schedule marks holidays as open to all incarcerated individuals, whatever the DIN.

Under the NYSDOCCS visitation update that took effect on 7 September 2026, Cayuga is one of the prisons that also takes visits on weekday holidays. The facility’s own page still reads “Weekends”, and the update is the newer of the two.

For a family whose day keeps falling awkwardly, a holiday is the one date with no parity to check.

Hours, and the 2:30 PM Line

Visits run 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. The latest you can arrive is 2:30 PM, an hour before the room closes, and arriving after it means no visit that day.

More than one visit a day can happen when there is space, but a visitor who leaves cannot come back the same day. Settle everything you want to bring and say before you go through.

When the Room Is Full

If space runs short, NYSDOCCS ends visits in a published order:

  1. Visitors who volunteer to leave.
  2. Local visitors, from within 100 miles, who have been there three hours or more.
  3. Visitors from further away.

Visits approved by special permission, and visitors who have not seen the person in six months, are protected from this. A family travelling from New York City counts as distant.

Special Housing

Anyone in the Special Housing Unit at Cayuga is allowed one non-legal visit in a seven-day period, during the normal visiting hours.

Three Visitors, and the Under Fives

Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five, who sits on an adult’s lap and does not count toward the three.

A child of five or older does count, so three adults and a six year old is a group of four and will not fit.

How a Visit Is Arranged

Nothing needs booking for a regular visit. Under NYSDOCCS rules you can visit during visiting hours with proper photo identification, as long as the person inside agrees to the visit.

On a first visit, staff take your photograph for the visitor identification system and you sign a statement agreeing to the visiting rules. Leave time for it before the 2:30 PM cutoff.

Some visitors need advance written approval: people on probation or parole, NYSDOCCS staff, volunteers, contract workers, and anyone with past or pending criminal cases.

Children are straightforward. Their own children can visit without written permission where the parent’s name is on the birth certificate. A child under eighteen visiting without a parent or guardian needs the parent’s written permission.

Getting to Moravia

Cayuga sits in the Finger Lakes, south of Owasco Lake, at 2202 State Route 38A outside the village of Moravia.

FromApproximate journey
AuburnAbout thirty minutes
IthacaAbout forty minutes
SyracuseAbout fifty minutes
New York CityAbout four and a half hours

Auburn Correctional Facility is a separate state prison in the same county, in the city of Auburn. It is not the place to go for a Cayuga visit.

The free state visitor bus does not serve Cayuga.

What to Bring

Photo identification for everyone over sixteen, and the visit does not proceed without it.

Phones, bags and electronics stay in the car.

If you are bringing money, the visitor lockbox takes $50 in cash a day in total, however many of you are visiting, and it takes money orders and checks as well.

On the Days That Are Not Yours

One weekend day in two belongs to the other group, and weekdays have no visiting at all outside holidays.

Calls from every New York state prison have been free since August 2025, and letters and photographs land on the days you cannot come. Pigeonly sends both from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 1186 with the right ZIP, so the days in between are not silent ones.
