What the Sheriff Publishes
The page is called Incarcerated Individual Bookings, and the county describes it as an up-to-date real-time list of all prisoners in the facility.
That is a real advantage, because most New York counties send families to the statewide service instead.
The Two Exclusions
Read them before you trust an empty result, because they are broader than most people expect.
The list excludes anyone under 19 years old, and it excludes federal detainees.
That second one matters at this jail specifically, because Chautauqua’s own corrections page confirms it holds federal detainees alongside county ones. So somebody genuinely in this building can be absent from the list by design.
What We Found When We Tested It
We tried the roster from a United States connection and the data never arrived. The page loaded its frame and its message asking for patience while real-time information comes from the servers, and then it sat there.
We tried the underlying data source directly and got nothing back either.
That may be temporary. Systems like this go down and come back. But we are not going to send you to a tool and let you assume it is working, so treat it as worth one attempt rather than as the answer.
One Thing to Know if It Does Load
The county publishes a footnote about the bail column that is easy to misread:
0.0000 indicates the individual’s bail is NOT set OR they are sentenced
So a zero in that column does not mean somebody can walk out for nothing. It means either no bail has been set yet, or there is no bail because they are serving a sentence. Those are very different situations and the list does not distinguish them.
The Routes That Do Answer
The jail, on 716-753-4935. A staffed line confirms a booking while any database is still catching up, and it works when the roster does not.
Sheriff’s Administration, on 716-753-4900, for anything the jail line cannot settle.
The statewide custody service, which takes a name and covers New York county jails. It lags behind a booking and an empty result there proves nothing on its own, but it will register you for notifications about custody changes.
While you have somebody on the phone, ask for their booking number. You need it for the envelope, because personal mail here goes to a scanning box in Syracuse addressed with the facility name and that number.
Make Sure It Is the Right Chautauqua
There is a Chautauqua County in Kansas, and it surfaces in searches for this one. If you are working from a search result rather than the Sheriff’s own site, check the state before you act on anything.
What Kind of Jail This Is
Useful for working out whether this is the right place.
Roughly three quarters of the people held here are awaiting trial. It also holds people serving sentences, New York State parole violators, county probation violators and federal detainees. The maximum sentence served here is two years, and the average stay is about six months.
The 2025 average daily population was 190, down 31 percent across the decade. The county described about 180 people across nine housing units in 2023, with 1,528 bookings in 2022, roughly five a day.
It runs with 79 correction officers, seven sergeants, a training sergeant, three lieutenants and a warden, and it received New York State accreditation on 17 December 2025.
When the Arrest Was Hours Ago
Nothing online helps yet. The booking has to be finished before any record exists, and at five bookings a day this is not a jail with a queue moving every minute.
Give it a few hours and ring. Once you know they are there, Pigeonly can get a letter and photos moving to the Syracuse box the same day.
