What You Need to Know

Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office: Incarcerated Individual Bookings See our sources ›

The Sheriff advertises a real-time list of everyone in the facility, which would put Chautauqua ahead of most New York counties. Two things qualify it. The list excludes anyone under 19 and all federal detainees, and when we tried it the data never arrived. The jail line is the route that answers.

Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office: Visitation See our sources ›

Visits run Wednesday to Sunday across five one hour sessions, and every one is booked online with no phone option. The booking window is narrow at both ends: nothing inside two days, nothing beyond three weeks. Cancel late or fail to turn up and you are recorded as a no-show.

Personal mail leaves the county entirely, going to a scanning box in Syracuse that delivers colour images to a tablet. Legal and privileged correspondence does not, and goes to the county's own box in Mayville with a different identifying number on it. Sending one to the other's address is the mistake to avoid.

Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office: Bail See our sources ›

Commissary money runs through SmartDeposit by card. Bail is where this county is unusually clear: it publishes five separate routes and states outright that cash brought to the jail carries no fee, while every other route charges. That is a rare piece of plain speaking about cost.

The county runs GettingOut, the ViaPath service, for tablets and messaging, and the account is opened and funded from the outside. The same tablet is where your scanned letters land.

6 of 9 questions

Q

Where do I send a letter to someone at the Chautauqua County Jail?

Personal mail goes to PO Box 807, Syracuse, NY 13201, with the full facility name and state on the first line and their name and booking number on the second. Legal and privileged mail goes somewhere else entirely, to PO Box 190, Mayville, NY 14757, with their MFN number.

Mail & Photos
Q

Why are there two addresses?

Because personal mail is scanned and legal mail is not. Letters, pictures and drawings go to a scanning box in Syracuse and reach your person as colour images on a tablet. Privileged correspondence stays out of that system and goes to the county's own box in Mayville.

Mail & Photos
Q

What are the visiting hours?

Wednesday through Sunday, with sessions starting at 7:25, 8:40 and 9:55 in the morning and 12:05 and 1:20 in the afternoon. Each lasts an hour. Each person gets two visits a week and they have to fall on different days.

Visitation
Q

How do I book a visit?

Online only, through the county's scheduling site. Register with a valid email address, confirm it, then log in with the temporary password you are sent and change it. Visits must be booked at least two days ahead and no more than three weeks ahead.

Visitation
Q

What happens if I turn up late?

If you are more than 30 minutes late your person is taken back to their housing unit and the visit is over. If you are less late than that, you wait until the half-way point of the session before you are let in. Arriving 15 minutes early is what the county asks for.

Visitation
Q

Can I bring my children?

Yes, but count them. The maximum is two visitors at one time and the county states that children count as one visitor no matter their age. A child needs an original birth certificate at check in. No child can be left unattended in the waiting room, so if nobody can supervise them you will not be able to visit.

Visitation
Q

How do I put money on an account?

Through SmartDeposit, online or on 1-866-643-9557, by credit card. The county says a fee is charged by the company handling the transaction. Commissary itself runs once through an electronic kiosk inside the jail.

Send Money
Q

How do I pay bail?

Five ways, and one of them is free. Cash brought to the jail carries no fee at all. The others are a credit card at the jail, a bail bondsman, an online payment service, or a telephone line on 1-877-EZBAIL5, and each of those charges.

Send Money
Q

Is there an inmate list I can search?

The Sheriff's Office publishes what it calls a real-time list of everyone in the facility, excluding people under 19 and federal detainees. When we checked it the list itself would not load, so treat it as worth trying rather than relied upon, and use the jail line if it does not answer.
