Three Boxes, and Only One Takes Money
Worth settling first, because Clinton makes this easy to get wrong.
| Box | What it is for |
|---|
| P.O. Box 2001, Dannemora | Letters to a person in custody |
| P.O. Box 2000, Dannemora | The prison as an institution |
| PO Box 531190, Miami, Florida 33153 | Money |
Money does not go to the Adirondacks at all.
Get the Deposit Slip Before the Money Order
Before anything else, get a JPay deposit slip. DOCCS publishes them in English and Spanish.
A money order arriving alone is a payment with nothing attached to say whose it is. The slip is what connects it to a DIN, and the DIN is what connects it to a person. A name will not do, because two people can share one.
So: DIN from the lookup, then slip, then money.
What Each Route Costs
| Route | Where | Cost | Limit |
|---|
| Money order or cheque by post | JPay lockbox, Miami | Free | $999.99 per transaction |
| Visitor lockbox | Inside the prison, on a visit | Free | $50 cash per person per day |
| Online | JPay, through DOCCS account deposits | Fee applies | $999.99 per transaction |
| Phone | JPay, 1-800-574-5729 | Fee applies | $999.99 per transaction |
Free is slower, paid is faster, and that is the decision.
The Lockbox Is Only Useful If You Are Already Coming
Every DOCCS facility has a visitor deposit lockbox, taking cash up to $50 per person per day plus money orders and cheques, with no fee.
At a prison near a city that is a genuinely easy option. At Dannemora it is not, unless you are visiting anyway. Albany is about three hours away and New York City the better part of six, so for most families the postal route or the online one is the real choice.
If you are visiting, use it. DOCCS forwards what goes in to JPay rather than processing it at the prison, so the timing matches the other routes.
Never in the Letter
Do not enclose money in the envelope to P.O. Box 2001.
Incoming mail is opened and inspected specifically for cash, cheques and money orders. Enclosing money does not speed anything up. It gets intercepted, and it delays the letter as well.
What the Balance Pays For
The account covers commissary: food, coffee, hygiene items, stationery, stamps and over-the-counter basics.
It also covers secure messaging stamps through the JPay kiosk service.
It no longer has to cover phone calls. New York made those free to families in August 2025, so there is no need to keep a balance topped up to stay in touch by phone.
Packages Are Not Bought With This
A separate system and a separate budget.
Packages come directly from an approved vendor by USPS, FedEx or UPS. Families cannot post or carry one in. The allowance is two non-food packages a year and three food packages a month up to a combined 40 pounds, with the detail in Directive #4911.
If He Moves
New York transfers people, and a transfer changes none of the money mechanics. JPay holds the account against the DIN and not the building, so deposits follow him.
The letter address does change, so check the lookup before posting anything to Dannemora.
More Than a Balance
A deposit keeps the commissary stocked. It does not do the other thing. Pigeonly sends letters and photos to P.O. Box 2001 from your phone, which matters more at a prison this far from everyone.
