Elmira allows visits Thursdays and weekends, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with last entry at 2:00 PM. Most visitors don’t need approval in advance. As long as you bring valid photo ID and the person agrees to see you, the Watch Commander can clear a first-time visit the same day. People in the Special Housing Unit are limited to one non-legal visit per week. A few categories of visitors, like recently released people or those on parole, need written approval from the Superintendent first.
Bring one valid, current photo ID: a driver’s license, DMV non-driver ID, government ID, military ID, or work ID with photo. Everyone passes through a metal detector and is subject to search, and DOCCS may use canines to screen people and vehicles. If metal in your clothing or jewelry sets off the detector, staff may ask you to remove it or offer a private search before you go through again. You can always decline a more invasive search and leave instead, and that choice will not be held against you on future visits.
You can leave funds at the visit lockbox in cash, check, or money order. Cash is capped at $50 per person per day. Checks and money orders go through a JPay deposit slip and can go up to $999.99 each, with no fee either way. Bring small bills or change for vending machines; only visitors can use them.
No cell phones, smart watches, cameras, or recording devices past the front gate; lock them in your car. You can’t bring outside food, drinks, packages, or gifts to hand the person directly, only vending machine items. Declare any prescription medication to the gate officer; it stays secured during your visit.
Dress modestly: no sheer fabric, bare midriffs, plunging necklines, shorts above mid-thigh, or swimwear. If you arrive with a small child, you can bring a diaper bag with up to 3 diapers and plastic baby bottles, all subject to search.
