FCI Ray Brook Inmate Search

Ray Brook Road has a federal prison and a New York state prison a short way apart, each with its own search, so start by knowing which court the case went through. Start with the search below.

Overview

FCI Ray Brook is a federal prison, so it is searched with the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator, by register number or name. The hamlet of Ray Brook also holds a New York State prison, Adirondack Correctional Facility, a short way along the same road, with a different ID number and a different lookup.

Quick Facts

  • 1 Search at bop.gov/inmateloc by register number or name
  • 2 Register number format for the locator is #####-###
  • 3 Adirondack Correctional Facility is a separate state prison on the same road
  • 4 State prisoners have a DIN and use the DOCCS lookup
  • 5 FCI Ray Brook has a detention center as well as the prison
  • 6 809 people listed on 1 October 2026
  • 7 U.S. Marshals custody does not show in the locator
  • 8 Released or Not in BOP Custody can still mean held elsewhere

One National Locator

There is no FCI Ray Brook search of its own. The Federal Bureau of Prisons runs one inmate locator for every federal facility, at bop.gov/inmateloc, and it finds people by register number or by first and last name.

The register number is the federal ID. It stays the same for the whole sentence, whatever prison the person is moved to.

FCI Ray Brook or Adirondack Correctional Facility?

Ray Brook holds two prisons run by two governments, on the same road.

People searching for “Ray Brook Correctional Facility” could mean either. If the case went through a federal court, it is this locator. If it went through a New York State court, it is the DOCCS lookup and our Adirondack Correctional Facility guide.

The Register Number Has Two Formats

WhereFormatExample
The inmate locatorFive digits, dash, three digits12345-678
Money orders and transfersEight digits, no dash or space12345678
MoneyGram and Western Union account fieldEight digits then the surname12345678DOE

The locator shows the dashed form. Every deposit route wants the undashed one, which is where most lost deposits start.

What the Result Shows

A record gives the register number, age, race, sex, a projected release date where one is set, and the current facility. FCI Ray Brook also has a detention center, so a person held there before sentencing shows the same facility name.

It does not show a housing unit or a phone number.

Released or Not in BOP Custody

If the record says Released or Not in BOP Custody with no facility, the person is no longer held by the Bureau. The Bureau adds that they may still be in the custody of another system, such as a state prison, a county jail or the U.S. Marshals.

When the Search Comes Back Empty

  1. They are still with the U.S. Marshals. Someone arrested on a federal charge is held by the Marshals first and only appears once the Bureau books them in.
  2. They are in New York State custody, not federal. A state sentence means a DIN and the DOCCS lookup, not this one.
  3. The name on the record differs. Try the surname alone, or the register number.
  4. They have moved. The record follows the person, so a name search finds them at their new facility.

The Detention Center

FCI Ray Brook holds people before sentencing as well as people serving federal sentences. Someone held pretrial may move on quickly, to court or to another facility after sentencing, so check the locator again before you post anything.

After You Find Them

Write down the register number in both formats. You need it for the envelope and for any deposit. Pigeonly takes the name and register number and sends letters and photos to FCI Ray Brook from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 900 with the register number in place.
