Overview

All visiting at FCI Ray Brook is suspended until further notice, according to the Bureau’s own page for the prison. No reason or end date is given. The last published visiting rules, from 2020, set weekends and holidays from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, up to five adults, and a list of immediate family plus twelve friends, so families can get approved now for when visits resume.

Visiting Is Suspended

The Bureau’s FCI Ray Brook page carries one line above everything else: “All visiting at this facility has been suspended until further notice.” It was still there on 1 October 2026.

The Bureau gives no reason and no end date on the page. Before planning any trip, call the main line on 518-897-4000 and ask whether visiting has resumed. Ray Brook is a long way from most families, and a wasted journey into the Adirondacks costs a day.

The Rules When Visiting Runs

When visiting is open, the facility’s visiting supplement, RBK 5267.09D, dated 30 September 2020, sets the schedule. It may be revised when visits resume, so treat these as the last published rules, not a promise.

Regular schedule
DaysSaturday, Sunday and holidays
ProcessingFrom 8:00 AM
Visiting8:30 AM to 2:30 PM
Last processing1:30 PM. Arrive later and you are not let in.

How many: up to five adults per visit. Children under 16 are not counted against that limit.

Who can be on the list: immediate family, plus a maximum of twelve friends and associates. People held pretrial or as holdovers in the detention center can only have immediate family and attorneys on their list.

Getting Approved

The person inside sends you a visitor information form from the Unit Team. You complete it and return it, the Unit Team runs a background check, and the person is told who has been approved. Start this now, during the suspension, so the list is ready when visiting reopens.

The Dress Code From the 2020 Rules

  • No see-through clothing, tank tops or halter tops.
  • No shorts or skirts more than six inches above the knee.
  • No bare feet and no open-toed shoes.
  • No hats, except religious headwear.
  • Men may not wear khaki trousers or shirts, the colour worn inside.

Not allowed: food, gum, sweets, toys, balloons, books, magazines, newspapers, phones and cameras.

Vending machine food has to be unwrapped onto plates, and people inside and visitors cannot share from the same packet.
