Free Inmate Lookup for Upstate Correctional Facility

A result that says Malone could mean either of two state prisons on Bare Hill Road, and they take different post boxes and phone numbers. Start with the search below.

Overview

New York runs one free lookup covering every state prison, so there is no separate Upstate tool. The work is in reading the answer. Upstate and Franklin Correctional Facility stand about 250 yards apart on the same road in the same town, and almost everything a family needs to do next depends on which of the two the result names.

Quick Facts

  • 1 One statewide tool at nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov
  • 2 Free, with no account and no fee
  • 3 Takes a DIN, or a last name and first name
  • 4 Upstate is maximum security, adult male
  • 5 Franklin, 250 yards away, is medium security
  • 6 Upstate takes P.O. Box 2000, Franklin takes P.O. Box 10
  • 7 A result names the facility, never the housing unit
  • 8 State prisons only, so county jails are searched elsewhere

The Tool, and What It Costs

Nothing. The lookup is at nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov, it is run by the state, and it is open to anyone. No sign-up, no fee, no limit on how often you use it.

It returns people held in New York state prisons. Upstate is one, so the free inmate lookup for Upstate is this search with a name typed into it.

Searching by Name

With a DIN in hand, enter that. It is exact and it is the fastest route.

Without one, the search takes a last name and first name. Three things decide whether it comes back:

  • The legal name beats a nickname.
  • A maiden name is worth trying if one might be on record.
  • The spelling has to be right, because the tool matches what you type exactly.

Malone Is Not an Answer

Here is the part that is specific to this prison.

Two New York state prisons operate at Malone, on Bare Hill Road, roughly 250 yards apart. A result giving you the town narrows nothing down. A result giving you the facility name settles it.

Four differences, one road. Read the facility line.

The DIN Is the Key to Everything Else

What the lookup returns is a Department Identification Number, and nothing else you do works without it.

Where you need itWhat happens without it
The envelopeMail is not matched to a person
The JPay deposit slipDeposits are matched to the DIN, not a name
Any call to the prisonIt is the first thing you will be asked

Write it down once, carefully, and you will not be looking for it again.

Upstate Is a Facility Name, Not a Region

A search for the words “upstate” and “prison” returns half of New York, because upstate is what most of the state is called.

The prison is Upstate Correctional Facility, at Malone, in Franklin County. Searching the full name with New York attached avoids the problem, and so does searching the DIN.

County Jails Are a Separate System

The DOCCS lookup covers state prisons only.

Somebody awaiting trial, serving under a year, or recently arrested is usually held in a county jail, and every county runs its own roster. A blank result frequently means the county is the right place to look, not a sign the search failed.

People also move into state prison after sentencing, so a name that was in a county jail last month can be at Malone now.

Nothing Comes Back

Work through it in this order.

  1. Spelling, then variants, then a maiden name.
  2. Not yet in state custody. Sentencing comes first, then transfer.
  3. Transferred. New York moves people between prisons and the lookup follows, so search again instead of assuming the last facility still holds.
  4. County or federal custody. Separate systems with separate tools.

Search Again After Any Gap

A transfer between prisons changes the address and the facility on the deposit. If a few weeks have passed since you last looked, re-run the lookup before you post a letter or send a deposit.

After the Number

Once you have the DIN, Pigeonly sends letters and photos from your phone, addressed to Upstate’s P.O. Box 2000 rather than Franklin’s P.O. Box 10 down the road.

6 of 10 questions

Q

Is there an Upstate Correctional Facility inmate lookup of its own?

No. New York runs one tool at nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov covering every state prison, Upstate included, so that search is the Upstate lookup.

Inmate Search
Q

Is the inmate lookup free?

Yes. The New York state lookup is free and open to anyone, with no account to create and no limit on how often you search.

Inmate Search
Q

Can I search by name?

Yes. Last name and first name both work alongside the DIN. Use the legal name before a nickname and try a maiden name if one might be on file, because the tool matches spelling exactly.

Inmate Search
Q

How do I know it is Upstate and not Franklin?

By the facility name on the result. Both prisons are at Malone on Bare Hill Road about 250 yards apart. Upstate is 309 Bare Hill Road at P.O. Box 2000, maximum security. Franklin is 62 Bare Hill Road at P.O. Box 10, medium security.

Inmate Search
Q

What is a DIN?

The Department Identification Number New York assigns to everyone in state custody. It goes on the envelope and on the deposit slip, and deposits are matched to it, not to a name.

Inmate Search
Q

Does the result show a housing unit?

No. It names the facility and gives custody details. Housing units and blocks are not in any New York result, and neither mail nor money needs one.

Inmate Search
Q

Are there photographs in the results?

No. The New York lookup returns identifying and custody information, not booking photographs.

Inmate Search
Q

Why does searching for upstate prison return so much?

Because upstate is what most of New York outside the city is called, so the word alone matches a great deal. The facility is Upstate Correctional Facility, at Malone in Franklin County, and searching the full name settles it.

Inmate Search
Q

The name is not coming back at all.

Check the spelling first, then consider that they may not be in state custody yet. People awaiting trial or serving under a year are usually held in a county jail, and every county runs its own roster outside the statewide tool.

Inmate Search
Q

When should I search again?

Before each letter and each deposit if any time has passed. A transfer moves the person and the lookup follows them, and Franklin's P.O. Box 10 sits on the same road, so read the facility line every time.
