Postcard-Only Mail Policy

Sandusky County Jail restricts incoming mail to plain white postcards only. This is a common policy at county jails that have updated their mail rules to reduce drug contamination risk through ink and paper handling. Postcards must meet all of the following requirements:

• Size: No larger than 4 inches by 6 inches (standard postcard size)
• Color: Plain white only. No colored cardstock.
• Postage: Metered or unstamped. Do not apply postage stamps.
• Ink: Pencil or blue or black ink only. No other colors.
• Attachments: No stickers, glitter, glued items, or anything adhered to the postcard.
• Content: No content describing weapons, violence, escape methods, racial supremacy, or anything that threatens jail security or order.

Any postcard that doesn’t meet these requirements will be returned to sender or, if there’s no return address, held in the inmate’s locker.

What Is Not Accepted

The following items will be returned:

• Standard letters inside envelopes
• Greeting cards (including commercial birthday or holiday cards)
• Photos (printed or Polaroid)
• Books and magazines from any source
• Packages of any kind
• Postcards with stamps, stickers, or glitter
• Mail handed directly to front desk staff

No mail is accepted at the lobby or front desk. It must go through U.S. Mail.

Use this exact format for all inmate mail:

[Booking Number, if known]

Include the inmate’s full legal name. Adding their booking number helps the mailroom route the postcard quickly, especially if you don’t know it. You can get the booking number by calling (419) 334-6446) or checking the official inmate roster.

Inmate-to-Inmate Mail

Mail between inmates is not allowed at Sandusky County Jail and will be destroyed if discovered.

Legal Mail

Legal correspondence from attorneys, courts, and government agencies follows a different process. Legal mail is generally opened only in the inmate’s presence to confirm no contraband is included, then delivered sealed.
