Why There Is No Separate Clements Unit Roster

Families often search for a Bill Clements Unit roster, expecting a page that lists everyone held there. The William P. Clements Unit does not publish one, and neither does any other TDCJ prison. TDCJ runs a single statewide inmate locator instead.

One search covers every unit in Texas, so you never have to know which prison someone is in before you look. You search by name or by TDCJ number, and the result tells you the current unit. That works better than a fixed roster would, because people move between units and a statewide search follows them. So when a search points you here, treat it as the roster you were looking for.

How to Read a Clements Result

Search by name or by TDCJ number. The number is far more reliable, because names are stored as the commitment name on record rather than the one he goes by, so a nickname or a shortened first name can miss.

A result naming Clements comes back with his TDCJ number, his SID number, his current unit of assignment, his race and gender, his projected release date, and his maximum sentence date. That unit line is the one you use for everything else: it decides which address takes his legal mail, which prison you book a visit at, and which switchboard answers. If the unit line changes, so do all three.

Told He’s at the Neal Unit? Search by Name

The Nathaniel J. Neal Unit sits right next to Clements, on the same road. Clements is at 9601 Spur 591 and Neal is at 9055, and TDCJ’s own Clements page describes the two as co-located on one 592-acre site.

So if a letter, a court record, or a relative has told you Neal, you do not need to sort out anything about Neal itself. Search by his name on the TDCJ locator and it shows the unit he is assigned to now. To confirm, call the Clements Unit on (806) 381-7080. The two prisons share the same site and the same staff region, so that switchboard can tell you where he is.

If the Locator Doesn’t Find Him

The most common reason a search comes back empty is the name. TDCJ stores the commitment name, so a nickname or a shortened first name will not match. Try the TDCJ number instead.

The second reason is that he is not in TDCJ custody at all. Someone arrested in Amarillo and awaiting trial is usually held in a county jail, not a state prison, and county rosters are separate from the TDCJ locator:

There is no federal prison in Amarillo, in Potter County, or anywhere in the Texas Panhandle, so if you were told federal custody, the Bureau of Prisons runs its own separate locator.
